A total of five Panthers tallied double-digits, as the Old Westbury women's basketball team won its second-straight game this evening, beating St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) 81-68 at the Clark Athletic Center. With the win, the Panthers improve to 3-2 overall on the season.
After taking a 10-point advantage in the halftime break, Old Westbury opened the second period with an 8-2 run to take a 16-point lead at the 17:35 mark on a lay-up by Leah Hernandez.
The Panthers remained in control of the game and took their largest lead, a 23-point edge, on a jumper by Monique Midy with 10:57 on the clock.
With Old Westbury up by 20 with 1:38 remaining in the game, Debra Lupenwicz's lay-up kicked off a 12-0 run by St. Joseph's that pulled the Lady Bears within eight with under a minute to play, but Jessica Lippolis sank two free throws for Old Westbury on the next play to end the threat.
In the first half, St. Joseph's trailed by 17 and used a 13-0 run to cut the Panthers' lead to four.
Hernandez ended the run with a three-pointer for Old Westbury and the Panthers turned around and built their lead back up to 10.
Midy came off the bench to lead all scorers with 16 and finished with a double-double by adding 10 rebounds. Rachel Yambaye also had a double-double for the Panthers, finishing with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Lynette Reyes led St. Joseph's with 13 points.
Old Westbury is back in action with the Skyline opener on Saturday at Kings Point at 2:00 pm.
