WOMEN'S BASKETBALL 2006-07 SEASON IN REVIEW

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.-The SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball finished the 2006-07 season with a 13-13 overall record and 5-11 in the Skyline Conference.  The Panthers season was highlighted in the final four games, going 3-1 with monster wins on February 10th versus the College of New Rochelle, 79-28 and against CCNY on February 12th, 79-17.  Old Westbury faced off against Stevens Institute of Technology in the first round of the Skyline Conference Championship Tournament, losing on the road, 58-47 to conclude the 2006-07 season.

The Panthers were led by senior guard Danna Purnell (Deer Park, N.Y.) who averaged a team high 12.1 points per game.  Purnell led the way with 3.4 steals and 4.5 assists and was second on the team with 7.6 rebounds.  Purnell was named to the All-Skyline Conference Second Team and twice was named to the Skyline Conference Weekly Honor Roll.  On January 2nd Purnell averaged 11.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 6.5 assists in two games and on February 19th she averaged 15.3 points, 11.3 rebounds and 5 assists, helping her team to two wins for the week.  The 2006-07 season saw the emergence of junior center/forward Ashawn Ferguson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who provided the Panthers with an interior force on both ends of the court.  Ferguson appeared in 25 games and drew 11 starts, averaged 9 points per game and pulled down a team leading 8.4 rebounds including 104 offensive rebounds.  On February 19th, Ferguson was named to the Skyline Conference Weekly Honor Roll.  Junior forward Monique Midy (Westbury, N.Y.) was second in the team with an average of 10.1 points per game in 26 games.  Midy pulled averaged 6.4 rebounds and 1.7 steals.  Midy was named to the Skyline Conference Weekly Honor Roll on both January 9th and 22nd.  Midy pouring in 20 points and pulling down 9 rebounds in a 74-38 win over Briarcliffe College to earn a selection to the Weekly Honor Roll on January 9th.  On January 22nd, Midy was once again honored as she averaged 17.6 points and 6 rebounds, helping the Panthers to a 2-1 record for the week.  Senior center/forward Jennifer Hoyt (Syosset, N.Y.) averaged 7.7 points and 4.3 rebounds in 11 games for the Panthers.  Sophomore guard Leah Hernandez (Forest Hills, N.Y.) led the Panthers with 37 three pointers on the season.  Hernandez averaged 7.9 points per game and 1.5 steals in 23 games for Old Westbury.  Freshman guard Jazmin Bradley (Flushing, N.Y.) led the team with a 77.6 percent shooting from the charity stripe in which she sank 59-of-76 attempts.  Bradley appeared in 26 games and finished her freshman year with an average of 7 points per game and 2.2 steals.  On January 2nd, Bradley was named to the Skyline Conference Weekly Honor Roll, when she averaged 11.5 points, 3.5 steals and 3 rebounds in two games.  Freshman forward Liila Mack (Monticello, N.Y.) was a solid option for coach Krasnoff of the bench, as she averaged 4.6 rebounds and 4.1 points per game in 21 appearances to go along with being named to the Skyline Conference Weekly Honor Roll on December 18th with a 10 points, 8 rebounds and 2 assist performance in a 79-76 win over St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn.  Junior guard Ashley Freeman (Bronx, N.Y.) appeared in 25 games and averaged 4.1 points per game.  Senior guard Chanel Benjamin (Bronx, N.Y.) averaged 1.3 steals per game off the bench as a defensive option for the Panthers in 24 appearances.   Senior forward Janera Johnson (Richmond Hills, N.Y.) appeared in 24 games in which she averaged 3.1 points and 2,6 rebounds, while shooting a team high 40 percent (6-of-15) from downtown.  Senior guard/forward Jessica Lippolis (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) helped groom the younger Panthers, appearing in 13 games for 6.1 minutes a contest.

Old Westbury will need to fill the holes left by five seniors as they look towards the 2007-08 season.  The Panthers will return five seniors, one junior and two sophomores to a team that averaged 57.9 points and 38.8 rebounds per game in 2006-07.
