OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.-The SUNY College at Old Westbury Women's Basketball team notched a non-conference victory over St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn, Saturday afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center, 75-71. Old Westbury climbs to 4-5 on the season while St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn falls to 4-8 overall.
Old Westbury jumped out to an early 12-2 lead to start the game and went into the half-way point with an 11 point advantage, 37-26. Despite being out-scored in the closing half, 45-38, the Panthers maintained control of the lead. The Bears chipped away at a 72-64 deficit with 4:43 remaining and trailed 72-71 after a free-throw by Svetlana Medvedeva with 2:24 left. The Panthers held strong over the final minutes in which Shannon Gilly sank three free-throws to propel the Panthers to victory.
Pamela Robinson poured in a team-high 25 points to lead the Panthers to victory. Robinson connected on 11-of-23 from the floor to go along with seven assists (game-high) and six rebounds. Ashley Freeman followed with 18 points including four triples, five rebounds, five assists and one steal. Shannon Gilly and Shameeka Bryan each registered a double-double to pace the Panthers throughout the game. Gilly finished with 15 points, 14 pull downs (team-high), four steals and two blocks while Bryan added 11 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and three steals. Shalyn Molnar chipped in with six points, five rebounds, one block and one steal.
The Bears were led by Svetlana Medvedeva's game-high 26 points on 11-of-14 shooting from the floor and 17 rebound (9 offensive) performance. Annamarie Ciorciari contributed 18 points, 10 rebounds and two steals while Allison Kavanagh grabbed 10 rebounds. Julia Serewko chipped in with nine rebounds off the bench.
St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn out-rebounded the Green and Ivory, 52-42, including a 21-14 advantage on the offensive glass. The Old Westbury defensive attack forced 19 turnovers resulting in 10 steals. The Bears could not keep pace with Old Westbury in the shooting department. The Panthers shot 40.8 from the field (31-for-76) while St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn was held to 28-for-82 (34.1%) shooting.
Old Westbury returns to action on Monday, January 7th to welcome non-conference opponent, York College to the Clark Athletic Center.
