WOMEN'S BASKETBALL RALLIES PAST POLYTECHNIC, 96-90 IN OVERTIME

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.-The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team held off Skyline Conference opponent, Polytechnic Institute of NYU, 96-90 in overtime on Saturday afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center, despite blowing a 20 point lead at half-time to improve to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference action.  Polytechnic fell to 2-4 on the year and 1-3 in league play.

Old Westbury's largest lead of the game was 27 points, a 48-21 advantage at the 3:36 mark in the first half.  The Blue Jays closed the gap to seven points, 77-70, with 4:02 remaining in the second stanza. The Panthers shot just 2-of-9 from the field with two turnovers to close out the final 4:02 while Katie Jo Sunday scored six of Polytechnic's 13 points, including the game tying jumper with 24 seconds remaining to force overtime.  Sophomore Shannon Gilly (Staten Island, N.Y.) was unable to convert on her attempt from inside the paint as time expired to send the game onto overtime.  Old Westbury outscored Polytechnic, 13-7 in overtime, led by sophomore Samantha Johnson (Queens Village, N.Y.), who had four points and freshman Courtney Milton (Bronx, N.Y.) scored six of her 10 points in the extra frame to help rally Old Westbury past Polytechnic. 

Samantha Johnson scored a career-high 32 points and five steals in 39 minutes of action. Johnson, one of three Panthers to score in double-figures, was 11-of-25 from the field and 3-of-7 on 3-pointers in the win. Her point total Saturday afternoon was the most of any Old Westbury player this season.  Senior Pamela Robinson opened her season with 27 points on 10-of-20 from the field, including 3-of-3 from downtown.  Robinson finished with eight assists and five steals before fouling out with 27 seconds remaining in regulation while classmate Shameeka Bryan (Jamaica, N.Y.) had 14 rebounds (9 offensive), eight assists, five points and two steals.  Courtney Milton and junior Krystal Garner added 13 and 10 rebounds respectively.  Milton tallied 10 points and four blocks while Shannon Gilly chipped in with eight rebounds, four points, four steals and a blocked shot.  Junior Carlie Moore (Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y.) came off the bench to score nine points with three triples as classmate Avery Josey (Staten Island, N.Y.) totaled seven points and four rebounds. 

Damei Maham led Polytechnic with a game-high 35 points on 12-of-17 shooting from the field to go along with eight rebounds and four steals.  Margaux Pickell followed with 25 points, 17 rebounds, three blocks, three steals and three assists.  Consuelo Aranda dished out a game-high 12 assists while Patrice Polite posted a double-double, combining 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The Panthers shot 36.8 percent from the field (35-of-95), hitting 50 percent of their attempts from behind the 3-point arc (9-of-18). Old Westbury struggled from the free throw line, making just 17-of-37 attempts for 45.9 percent.  Polytechnic connected on 43.2 percent from the field (32-of-74), while making 25 percent of its 3-pointers (2-of-8).  The Blue Jays made 66.7 percent from the charity stripe (24-of-36).  Old Westbury out-scored Polytechnic, 30-20, in points in the paint.
