Coach K is the chief architect of the women's basketball program at SUNY Old Westbury that was floundering when he joined the Old Westbury Athletic staff seven years ago and is now among the most respected programs in the region. As an assistant coach during the 2000-2002 seasons, Coach K helped guide the Panthers to their first winning season, a conference championship appearance and the programs first ever berth to post season play in the ECAC tournament. During that period of time Coach K earned a reputation among his players as a high spirited and passionate teacher and, among his peers, as a tireless and dedicated coach and recruiter.
In May of 2003 Coach K took over the helm of the women's basketball program at Old Westbury and promptly led his team to a record breaking winning season in spite of the Panther's transition that season to a more competitive Skyline Conference. Marred by an array of injuries, the Panther's struggled in 2004-05 season and fell below 500 for the first time since Coach K's inaugural season at Old Westbury. The 2005-06 season reflected Coach K's efforts to retool his squad and elevate the overall status of the Women's Basketball program. Those efforts paid off handily and resulted in another record breaking season for the Panther's, the second in Coach K's four complete seasons as Head Coach at Old Westbury.
Coach K's success at Old Westbury was built upon prior coaching experiences; first as a Head Coach at Valley Stream North High School and later as a Head Coach for the Long Island Silver Bullets where he spent six seasons coaching highly competitive AAU basketball and helped usher a number of players on to the college ranks. In addition, Coach K's teaching skills and knowledge of the game were cultivated during many years spent as an instructor at the prestigious Eastern Invitational Basketball Camp where he worked with some of the best minds in basketball.
