Old Westbury Volleyball Improves to 7-2 with Win Over Cooper Union

Old Westbury, NY ? The Old Westbury women?s volleyball team bounced back from Saturday?s loss to Stevens with a convincing 30-9, 30-8, 30-16 win over Cooper Union this evening at the Clark Athletic Center. With the win, the Panthers improve to 7-2 overall and continue to build on the record for most wins in a season.

In game one, with the Panthers leading 5-4, Jessica Ratchford took over the serve and tallied seven-straight points, giving Old Westbury a 12-5 advantage early on. Nihal Boz helped build the Panthers? lead with three-straight service aces and Jessica Ratchford and Jennifer Ragone combined for several points, en route to the 30-9 win in the first game.

Behind the serve of Jennifer Hoyt, Old Westbury tallied the first seven points of game two. Ratchford, who finished the match with seven kills, recorded four of those in game two, helping the Panthers to a 30-8 decision.

Cooper Union stepped up its play in game three and played the Panthers to a 16-12 score. Katrina Simmons recorded a kill on the next play, sparking a 9-0 run by Old Westbury. Vanessa Arias notched back-to-back kills during the run, which left the Panthers up 25-12. Cooper Union scored the next two points to stay in the game, but committed an error on the next play to give the serve back to the Panthers. Whitney Alexander?s kill on the next play was the first of two-straight Old Westbury points that left the Panthers up 28-14. Alexander?s kill with the score 28-16 gave Old Westbury match-point and the Panthers took the match after a ball handling error by Cooper Union?s May Cheng.

Old Westbury will return to action on Thursday when they play at the College of Staten Island. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:30 pm.
