A LOOK BACK AT WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL IN 2007
NOVEMBER 14, 2007
OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.-
The SUNY College at Old Westbury Women's Volleyball team concluded the 2007 season with an overall record of 13-24 and a 5-11 record against Skyline Conference opponents.
Having qualified for the previous two Skyline Conference tournaments, expectations were high for the Panthers in 2007. Led by a strong senior class Old Westbury was picked to finish second in the league standings, and after getting off to a 1-1, the Panthers went into downward spiral, winning just one of their next seven matches. Old Westbury appeared to be on the right track, after rebounding from a 2-7 start to win their next five matches to even out the record at 7-7. Alas, the Panthers lost control of the regular season as they would lose nine of the next ten matches to drop to 8-16. Old Westbury won the final three matches to close out the regular season to move onto their third consecutive appearance in the Skyline Conference Championship tournament. The Panthers made an early exit for the annual tournament, losing to Mount Saint Mary, 3-0 in the opening round.
Old Westbury's Whitney Alexander was the lone student-athlete voted on to the All-Skyline Conference team, capturing her first All-Conference award in her career. Alexander was voted to the second team in both, 2004 and 2005.
On a week to week basis, the Panthers were recognized by the Skyline Conference, claiming weekly awards throughout the season. Whitney Alexander (September 10, September 17, September 24, October 1, October 29), Siobhan West (September 10), Sheyra Veras (October 8) and Monique Midy (October 15) were named to the weekly honor roll throughout the season.
In the stat column, senior's Whitney Alexander and Monique Midy led the team's offensive attack with 323 (2.71 p/game) and 241 (2.01 p/game) kills, respectivly. Freshman sensation Siobhan West dished out a team-best 517 assists, averaging 4.24 per game while Sheyra Veras tallied 205 for an average of 2.33 per game. West led the Panthers with 72 service aces and Alexander followed with 56.
On the defensive end, Lauren Fischetti and Janera Johnson spearheaded the attack. Fischetti led the team with 417 digs, averaging 3.99 per game while Siobhan West totaled 319 (2.61 p/game). Johnson posted a team-leading 64 blocks (.67 p/game) and Monique Midy proceeded with 53 (.62 p/game).
Still, the 2007 season had its share of memorable moments, including Whitney Alexander eclipsing the 1,000 kill plateau, and the Panthers are confident they can get back where they want to be as they prepare for 2008.
