@OW_Panthers Swimming lends hand at Robert Moses State Park beach cleanup

Old Westbury swimming student-athletes got to enjoy the beach and do a good deed at the same time

BABYLON, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's and women's swimming set out to do something about beach pollution Saturday (May 14) morning by participating in the New York State Beach Cleanup program at Robert Moses State Park.

Old Westbury student-athletes helped maintain the beautiful beach of Field 3 by picking the dunes, dune fence-line, beach and shoreline free of litter. Old Westbury filled bags full of debris that arrived at the beach though human, wind and tidal sources.

"It was time well spent together as a team while doing something good for the environment," said Old Westbury head men's and women's swimming coach Sigitas Rudokas.

Rudokass and Old Westbury men's and women's swimming student-athletes Melanie Barone, Sara Bey, Rashaad Bryan, Laura Diaz, Habiba Nofal, Ian Febres, Samantha Imbembo, Yani Lukelo, Chani Nelson and Jonah Wegener participated in the event.

Of the 7,723 volunteers coordinated by the American Littoral Society in 2015, 125,544 pounds of debris were cleaned and documented along 250.21 miles of New York State's shoreline.

Since 1986, the Northeast Chapter of the American Littoral Society has coordinated New York's participation in the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC). This effort has the overarching sponsorship of the Ocean Conservancy in Washington, DC. The cleanup is a worldwide event in which over 100 countries and almost all of our states participate.
