Craig Newman

Craig Newman, of Cheltenham, England, enters his eighth season as SUNY Old Westbury head women's soccer coach.  

In just his first season at the helm, Newman was named Skyline Conference Co-Coach of the Year in 2008. During his rookie season, Newman produced a Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year in Cassandra Esposito, and a pair of All-Conference selections. In 2009, he led the squad to the program’s first ECAC Tournament appearance and two All-Conference first-team selections.  Newman guided to 2010 team to a program-best 11-win season.  His 2014 team was the recipient of the New York Metro Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association’s (NYMISOA) Sportsmanship Award.

During his tenure, Old Westbury has advanced to the Skyline Conference Championship Tournament six times, including three-straight trips to the semifinal round (2011-13).  Old Westbury also made three consecutive ECAC Championship Tournament appearances from 2009-11, and again in 2013.

Individually, the program has earned numerous All-Skyline Conference honors: Player of the Year (2),  Rookie of the Year (2) and All-Skyline selections (15).

During the 2008-09 and 2013-14 academic years, a pair of Newman's players were named SUNY Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award, one of the most selective and prestigious awards bestowed by SUNY.  The award recognizes a combination of academic excellence and outstanding athletic achievement.

Newman started his soccer career at the Cheltenham Gloucestershire College of Higher Education where he led his team to the Sweet 16 all four years and as a sophomore was named to the All Regional Team. From there he moved on to play for the County/State team in England for four years. He holds an FA Coaching License, NSCAA State Diploma and a NSCAA Regional Diploma.

Stateside since 2000, Newman was a full time member of Noga Soccer, in West Hempstead, New York. In 2005, Newman became a Head Coach for the Long Island Junior Soccer League in Plainview, New York, for which he led two tours to England and one Northeast College tour. Not only a sportsman in soccer, Newman also coached the University Swim Team in England for three years and is a qualified ASA Swimming Coach.

Newman is also a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).  He currently resides in Franklin Square, New York, with his wife, Debra, two girls Taryn and Brooke, and three dogs.
