Intramurals & Recreation Mission Statement

The mission of intramurals and recreation at SUNY Old Westbury is to enhance the mind, body, and spirit of students, faculty, and staff by providing programing, services, and facilities to meet the physical, social, recreational, and educational needs of the campus community.  We strive to encourage healthy lifestyles and well-being on the SUNY Old Westbury campus in a safe and welcoming environment. For more information about intramural sports, email Scott Bickard, Intramurals and Recreation Coordinator at bickards@oldwestbury.edu or phone 516.876.3241.

We organize free, fun, and competitive sports leagues and events for students and staff at Old Westbury of all ability levels. Our goals:

1. Have fun!

2. Be serious.
I wouldn't call it fun when two of our intramural basketball teams are battling back and forth for the win, but something else: "To be serious is the greatest joy."

3. Allow students to meet new people.
Over 80 percent of our students commute to campus and therefore may not have the same ease of forming social groups as at a more residential institution.

4. Expose students to a variety of sports and activities.
Not only do we want to get students to play non-traditional sports like ultimate frisbee and co-ed flag football, but we also want to give them a chance to play traditional sports they didn't get the chance to compete at in high school or college.

5. Develop existing athletic skills by matching students based on their ability levels.
The best games and matches are the closest ones. We also try to provide instruction, when possible, for new activities.

6. Create present and future employment options.
Many of our students either work at the gym or as assistant commissioners for each of our leagues. These positions, as well as participation in our leagues, provide students with experiences they can use when pursuing jobs and careers during and after college.
