STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.-The SUNY College at Old
Westbury women's soccer team fell 4-0 on the road to non-conference
opponent, Staten Island College on Wednesday evening. Old
Westbury now sits at 4-8 on the season with the set back while
Staten Island improves to 5-7 overall.
Staten Island received goals from four different Dolphins en
route to a 4-0 win over Old Westbury. The Dolphins controlled
most of the possessions and outshot the visiting Panthers, 25-5 and
a 10-2 corner kick advantage.
With the possession favoring the home side, Staten Island took
the lead 24 minutes in as Kelly Kenny gathered a rebound by
Jennifer Griffin and sent a laser from point blank into the top
right net beyond the outstretched arms of sophomore goalkeeper
Deborah Ciccarelli (St. James, N.Y.) for the score. Staten
Island doubled their advantage when Fiosa Begai received a lead in
pass from teammate Michele Kelly that deflected off Ciccarelli's
hands into the top left post for the score at the 51:06 mark.
Despite Old Westbury's best efforts, Jennifer Griffin tacked on her
second assist of the match in the 66th minute when she
sent a cross to the far right side to find Meaghan Suppa who scored
the third goal for the Dolphins. Staten Island capped off the
scoring when Trina Chechel netted a header that just tucked inside
the post off a corner kick by Kelly Kenny in the 69th
minute.
Ciccarelli finished with seven saves for Old Westbury,, while
Tina Bellocchio and Kelly Kenny made two stops each to earn the
shutout for Staten Island. Junior Courtney Dixon (Baldwin,
N.Y.) led the Panthers with two shots, while freshman Cassandra Esposito (Valley Stream, N.Y.) and Keisha Carter (New Rochelle,
N.Y.) added one apiece.
The Green and Ivory will return to action on Tuesday, October
21st against CCNY at Panther Park. Kickoff is
