PURCHASE, N.Y.-The SUNY College at Old Westbury
men's soccer team snapped a two game conference losing streak with
a 1-0 victory on the road at Purchase College Wednesday
evening. The Panthers now sit at 4-6 on the season, with a
2-2 record in the Skyline Conference while Purchase College moves
to 3-8 overall and 0-4 in league play.
Freshman Steven Paez (Glen Cove, N.Y.) broke open a scoreless game
when he put home a rebound from sophomore Justin Leakey (Baldwin,
N.Y.) at the 62:21 mark to lift the Panthers ahead, 1-0.
Paez's goal was his first of the season, and gave the Panthers a
lead that they would not relinquish. The Old Westbury defense
handled the rest, shutting out Purchase College, 1-0, for the
team's first shutout of the season.
While the scoring certainly helped, the biggest number on the day
may have been zero: the number of goals allowed by the Old Westbury
defense. Old Westbury sophomore goalkeeper Darian Bryan
(Elmont, N.Y.) recorded seven saves in all 90 minutes between the
posts to give him his first shutout of the season. Most
importantly, Old Westbury was able to improve its conference road
record to 2-1.
The Green and Ivory will return to action on Saturday, October
18th against Skyline Conference foe, St. Joseph's
College-L.I. for a rematch of the 2007 Skyline Conference
Championship at Panther Park. Kickoff is slated for 1:00
p.m. Please visit www.oldwestburypanthers.com
