OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.-The SUNY College at Old
Westbury men's basketball team was paced by Kristopher Afum (Bronx,
N.Y.), who was one of five Panthers to score in double figures with
a team-high 22 points leading the Green and Ivory to a 98-83
victory over Polytechnic Institute of NYU in Skyline Conference
play on Saturday at the Clark Athletic Center. Old Westbury
improves to 3-3 on the season and 2-1 in league play while
Polytechnic falls to 0-8 on the year and 0-3 in conference
action.
Old Westbury jumped out to an early 21-4 lead 13:33 into the
game and dominated throughout, forcing 22 turnovers. The
Panthers were ahead, 50-34, at halftime and built a 23-point
advantage, 61-38, with 15:20 left in the game.
Playing in just his sixth game for the Panthers, Afum was
9-of-17 from the floor with seven rebounds and was credited with
three steals in Old Westbury's final home game of 2008.
Junior Hakiem George (New York, N.Y.) poured in 20 points and was
5-of-10 from beyond the arc with six rebounds. Through six
games, George leads the squad in scoring (15.8 ppg) and
three-pointers (18). Junior Shane DeNully (Bronx, N.Y.)
dished out a season-high 12 assists to go with 12 points and three
steals as sophomore Lester Prosper (Bellmore, N.Y.) chipped in with
13 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Senior Garthlette
James (White Plains, N.Y.) had a season-high 18 points and led all
Panthers with eight rebounds, including four off the offensive
glass and four steals. James finished 7-of-13 from the field
and connected on 4-of-4 free throw attempts, bringing his season
total from the charity stripe to 16-of-17 (94.1 percent).
Polytechnic shot 50.7 percent from the field and were led by
Anthony Mottola's game high double-double of 23 points and 14
rebounds. Edward Johnson added 14 points while Thomas Demarco
and Vashista Amarjit had 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The bigger and more powerful Panthers shot 47.9 percent from the
field and out rebounded Polytechnic, 39-32. Polytechnic shot
a scorching 50.7 percent from the field (34-of-67), while making
only 20 percent of its 3-pointers (3-of-15). The Blue Jays
made 57.1 percent from the charity stripe (12-of-21) as Old
Westbury connected on 65.5 percent (19-of-29)
The Green and Ivory will pick up their dribble next on Saturday,
December 13th at non-conference opponent, William
Paterson University. Tipoff is slated for 2:00 p.m.
