OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.-The SUNY College at Old
Westbury women's soccer team suffered a conference loss on Saturday
afternoon, falling to St. Joseph's College-L.I., 6-2 at Panther
Park. With the loss, Old Westbury falls to 3-4 on the year
and 3-3 in league play while St. Joseph's College-L.I. improves to
6-4 on the season and 3-0 in conference action.
In the first half, the Golden Eagles took an early lead as Angie
Merante netted a header to the back of the net off a cross by
Jackie Barbour in the second minute of play. St.
Joseph's-L.I. doubled their advantage when Nicole Christensen
scored off a loose rebound in the box at the 14:38 mark. St.
Joseph's-L.I. scored the eventual game winner in the
60th minute when Angie Merante scored off a pass by
teammate Megan Brady for a 3-0 advantage. Alyssa Cote
increased the St. Joseph's-L.I. lead to 4-0 in the 63rd
minute when she scored off a rebound in the box. Freshman
Cassandra Esposito (Valley Stream, N.Y.) posted Old Westbury's
first score of the game in the 65th minute when she beat
a defender for the score off a pass from freshman Chryssanti Nicholas (Albany, N.Y.). Jessica Durant sent a ball to Jackie
Barbour in the 65th minute that landed past the
outstretched arms of sophomore keeper Deborah Ciccarelli (St.
James, N.Y.) to give the Golden Eagles a 5-1 advantage.
Esposito retaliated in the 66th minute when she served a
ball to the back post where she put home her team-leading
10th goal of the season on a pass by junior Jennifer Campisi (Commack, N.Y.). The Golden Eagles capped the scoring
in the 88th minute on a goal by Jackie Barbour.
The Golden Eagles out shot the Panthers 40-5 in the match
including holding an 18-4 advantage in shots on goal department in
addition to a 10-0 corner kick advantage. Cassandra Esposito led
Old Westbury with four shots while junior Mikele Reitmayr (Wantagh,
N.Y.) recorded one.
Deborah Ciccarelli made 12 saves and allowed six goals for Old
Westbury while Dana Carney posted a shut out over the first 64
minutes until Michelle Gulino closed out the final 26 minutes with
two goals allowed and two saves for the Golden
Eagles.
The Green and Ivory return to the pitch on Wednesday, October
1st at Skyline Conference opponent, Farmingdale
