Westbury at York Boxscore
JAMAICA, N.Y.-The SUNY College at Old Westbury
men's soccer team got second-half goals from junior Scott Madocks
(East Islip, N.Y.) and freshman Donny Alerte (Brooklyn, N.Y.) while
a trio of Panther goalies combined for the shutout en route to a
2-0 victory in the season opener on the road at non-conference
opponent York College on Wednesday afternoon.
After a scoreless first half which saw the Cardinals
out-shoot Old Westbury, 7-5, but were unable to capitalize on their
opportunities, Old Westbury jumped out to the lead at the 73:45
mark in the second half. Madocks took a pass from off the
foot of freshman Brian Orozco (North Babylon, N.Y.) and chipped it
into the back of the net past the Cardinal goalkeeper for the
eventual game winner and his first career goal as a Panther.
The Panthers put the match out of reach in the 88th
minute when freshman Mathais Coni (Oceanside, N.Y.) set up for a
corner kick and sent a perfect cross to classmate Donny Alerte
(Brooklyn, N.Y.) patrolling the near post and flicked a header past
the keeper to provide the final 2-0 margin.
The Panthers received an outstanding effort from their back line
that held strong the entire match. Junior goalkeeper Darian Bryan (Elmont, N.Y.) played the first-half before sophomore William Montenegro (Brentwood, N.Y.) and freshman Jonathan Aiola
(Plainview, N.Y.) combined for the shutout.
The game was a solid start for the Panthers, despite getting
out-shot by York 15-14, including a count of 4-3 in corner
kicks. The Green and Ivory will now test themselves at
the Spartan Cup Invitational hosted by D'Youville College at
All-High Stadium this weekend. Old Westbury open with
Morrisville State on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. followed by SUNYIT on
Sunday at 12 p.m. Please visit www.oldwestburypanthers.com for more information on men's
