ESPOSITO’S 50TH GOAL LEADS WOMEN’S SOCCER OVER PURCHASE ON SENIOR DAY

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's soccer team defeated the Purchase Panthers, 4-2, Saturday afternoon on Senior at Panther Park during the inaugural “Score For The Cure” Breast Cancer Awareness Match in Old Westbury, New York. With OW's win at the “Battle of the Panthers”, they improve to a program best 11-6 overall and 7-2 against the Skyline Conference while Purchase slipped to 6-8-1 and 4-6, respectively.

Senior Tiffany Lester, OW's lone senior, was honored prior to kick-off for her two years of dedication to Old Westbury Athletics. Earlier in the day OW teamed up with 1-in-9: The Long Island Breast Cancer Action Coalition for a Breast Cancer Awareness Walk around Panther Park. Both teams participated along with Breast Cancer survivors connected to the team, 1-in-9, New Hyde Park Lady Links Soccer Club and fans. 

The first goal of the game was scored by Abigail Katz at 12:01, giving the visiting Purchase Panthers an early 1-0 lead. Moments later at 16:52, OW scored its first goal of the game when Cassandra Esposito slotted a pass to freshman Samantha Clancy for the equalizer. Victoria Stewart scored OW's second goal in the 25th minute of play on a blast from the right side to put the home team up, 2-1.

Cassandra Esposito joined the 50-goal club at 33:14, on an assist by Kelly LaRose. Esposito's goal was her 17th of the season. Old Westbury went into the half with a 3-1 lead.

Victoria Stewart tucked away OW's final goal of the day at 55:13 from an assist by classmate Cristina Kettell. Purchase's Ashley Panepinto closed out the scoring in the 71st minute, but was not enough to take down Old Westbury.

Jennifer Kupfer made four saves in the game for Old Westbury while Purchase goalie Kristen Racaniello made 13 saves total. Total shots were in favor of Old Westbury 29-13 overall with shots on goal 17-6 against Purchase. Corner kicks were 4-2 in OW's favor, while fouls were whistled 7-4 against Old Westbury.

SAGE GATORS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to action on Sunday (Oct. 24) for a Skyline Conference showdown on the road against the Sage Gators. Panthers and Gators kick-off at 1 p.m. in Albany, New York.
