www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball team gave up a 20-point cushion in the second-half to drop an 86-83 Skyline Conference decision at St. Joseph's-L.I. Wednesday evening at the Danzi Center. OW saw its record drop to 2-4 on the season and 1-2in conference action as the Golden Eagles improved to 6-1 and 3-0, respectively.
The Panthers led by as many as 12 points in the first half; including a 21-9 run over the final 6:31 to take a 43-31 lead at the break. Frantz Granjean had 12 points and
Lester Prosper went for 10 in the first half to lead OW while Steve Velazquez hit for 15 on five treys.
OW used a 19-11 run out of the second-half gates to extend the lead to 20 (62-42) with 13:19 remaining in the game. St. Joseph's-L.I. responded by knocking down five straight three-pointers to close within eight points, 69-61. The Golden Eagles would continue to sizzle from beyond the arc, sinking 5-of-9 over the next 8:28 to grab an 84-83 lead with just 42 seconds remaining. Tyquan Moore had a chance to send the game into overtime with four second left but was unable to land a three pointer.
Lester Prosper had his 29th career double-double with 25 points and 14 rebounds in addition to three blocks in a losing effort. Frantz Granjean posted his third straight game with 20 or more points as he hit for 25 points on 12-of-18 shooting from the floor in 32 minutes off the bench.
Jamal Little chipped in with eight points and six rebounds while
Tymel Ambrose dished out a team-high four helpers off the bench.
Chris Jimenez erupted for 27 second-half points (7-10 3FG) and finished with a game-high 36 points (10-18 3FG) and six assists to lead the Golden Eagles. Steve Velazquez followed with 21 points on 7-of-16 from three-point land and Vincent Russo added 12 points on four triples. Trey Black chipped in with eight points, eight assists, six rebounds and two steals.
OW shot a season-best 50.7 percent from the field but struggled from long distance, hitting 5-of-16 (31.3%) and knocked down all six attempts from the line. St. Joseph's-L.I. connected on 21 three-pointers in 49 attempts (42.9%) and finished the evening at 40 percent from the field and 75 percent from the charity stripe. Old Westbury dominated the glass, pulling down 51 rebounds compared to 27 by the home team. St. Joseph's-L.I. turned the ball over just six times and forced OW into 14 giveaways, resulting into 15 Golden Eagle points.
YORK CARDINALS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the hardwood on Sunday (Dec. 12), participating in the CUNYAC Coaches vs. Cancer Classic against the York Cardinals hosted by Lehman College in the Bronx, New York. Game time is set to tip at 4 p.m. from the APEX Center.
