www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's volleyball team opened the 2010 campaign on Sunday morning at home for the Panther Invitational, welcoming the New Rochelle Blue Angels, Bard Raptors, Farmingdale State Rams and Maritime Privateers to the Clark Athletic Center. Old Westbury won 12 of 13 sets to claim the 2010 Panther Invitational title defeating New Rochelle, 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-10), Bard (25-17, 25-10, 25-16), Farmingdale State (22-25, 25-15, 25-17, 25-18) and Maritime (25-18, 25-3, 25-1).
Kristina Giordano led the Panthers with 27 aces and 67 assists en route to being named Panther Invitational MVP while classmate Tynishia George was an All-Panther Invitational selection after totaling 35 kills on 64 swings to hit .422. George also added 20 digs and two blocks.
OW started the day with a sweep over New Rochelle. Girodano had 10 aces and 14 assists as George and
Ashley Greene each had six kills.
Tonya Miller posted five blocks and
Kimberly Catania had four digs to pace the defense. Catania also had a pair of aces.
Old Westbury defeated Bard in three sets to improve to 2-0.
Kristina Giordano handed out 14 helped to go with nine aces and six digs while Tynishia George smashed 11 kills in 21 attempts (.429) and
Ashley Greene served up five aces to lead the offensive attack. George led the Panthers with seven digs followed by Giordano's six.
Tonya Miller led the way with three blocks.
After Farmingdale State took the only set from Old Westbury on the day, the Panthers outscored the Rams 75-50 to take a 3-1 match from their Skyline Conference rival. Girodano dished out a season-high 22 assists to go along with five aces as
Ashley Greene followed with four. Greene added 10 kills and Tynishia George had eight. Both George and
Shakira Canty led the defense with seven digs and
Tonya Miller's block party continued with six more on the match.
The Panthers capped off a 4-0 start to the season with a three set victory over Maritime. , where Giordano's 17 assists led OW to victory. Tynishia George had seven kills in 12 swings (.500).
Nancy Apollonio sparked the defense with a team-high seven digs followed by George's five.
Tonya Miller posted two more stuffs to give her 16 on the day.
SAINT ELIZABETH UP NEXT FOR OLD WESTBURY: Old Westbury returns to action against the Saint Elizabeth Screaming Eagles on Wednesday, September 15 at the Clark Athletic Center. Panthers and Eagles are set for a 7 p.m. first serve.
