Ugur Kahveci registered his second career game-winner at 8:02 into overtime to lift the men's soccer team to a 1-0 conference opening decision over the Mount Saint Mary Knights Saturday afternoon in Newburgh, New York. OW (4-3) jumps out of the gate at 1-0 in Skyline Conference play while depriving Mount Saint Mary (0-7 overall, 0-1 conference) of their first win.
Today's victory snapped Old Westbury's overtime winless streak of three.
Old Westbury tallied the game-winner at the 98:02 mark in the first overtime as
Anthony Ippolito cross from the right side found Kahveci, who connected on a header past MSM keeper Matthew Darling.
Darian Bryan and
Pablo Diaz combined for the third OW shutout of the season. Bryan logged just over 39 minutes in goal with four saves before
Pablo Diaz took over for the final 58:40 to stop six shots. Darling saved nine shots in a losing effort for the Knights.
Old Westbury held a 22-17 advantage in shots and drew even in shots on target (10-10) and corner kicks (2-2) with Mount Saint Mary. OW outshot the Knights 5-0 in overtime and 11-9 in the second half.
KING'S (PA.) UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the pitch on Sunday for non-conference action against the King's Monarchs at Panther Park. Kick-off is slated for 3:30 p.m. in Old Westbury, New York.
