OW VOLLEYBALL FALLS IN THREE TO NYU-POLY IN CONFERENCE OPENER

Panthers head to Brooklyn for Thursday’s non-conference match

BROOKLYN, NY (www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's volleyball team dropped its conference opener by a 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-17) final to the NYU-Poly Fighting Blue Jays at Jacobs Gymnasium on Tuesday evening. Old Westbury (6-4 overall, 0-1 Skyline) was led in the match by junior setter Kristina Giordano who finished with six kills.
 
Old Westbury struggled to find its way all night, finishing with only 19 kills and suffering 18 errors in 74 total attempts for a .014 hitting percentage. Giordano led the Panthers hitting efforts with a .545 hitting percentage with zero errors in 11 total attacks and two service aces. Ashley Greene followed with five kills and Tynishia George added three. 

Giordano finished with 12 assists, while tying freshman Kimberly Catania with a team-high eight digs. Also contributing defensively was Nancy Barahona who finished with seven digs. Old Westbury had for blocks in the match, paced by Tonya Miller, who had two while Giordano and Tanaya Vinson each added one. 

The Fighting Blue Jays were led by Meredith Shipman, who finished with a match-high 15 kills and hit .556 with zero errors in 27 swings. As a team, the Fighting Blue Jays hit .205 for the match with 27 kills and only nine errors in 88 total hits. Also leading the way for NYU-Poly were Nicole Breitbart and Melissa Pona, who had 21 assists and 16 digs, respectively. 

BROOKLYN BULLDOGS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury will take the court next on Thursday, September 23 for a non-conference road battle with the Brooklyn Bulldogs. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. in Brooklyn, New York.
