OLD WESTBURY PULLS OUT 4-3 WIN OVER ST. JOSEPH’S-L.I.

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.oldwestburypanthers.com) –A Diego Mercado goal with 1:28 remaining off a penalty kick lifted the SUNY College at Old Westbury men's soccer team past the St. Joseph's-L.I. Golden Eagles Saturday afternoon at Panther Park. The win improved OW to 7-3 on the season and 3-0 in Skyline Conference play while the Golden Eagles dipped to 5-5 and 1-2, respectively.
Hansel Riddock gave OW a 1-0 lead with a goal at the 21:18 mark of the first half on a header off an assist by Scott Madocks. It was his first goal of his collegiate career.

The Golden Eagles tied it with a goal just over four minutes later, only to see the Panthers go back in front at the 24:31 mark when Anthony Ippolito tallied his fourth goal of the season when Hansel Riddock was credited with his first assist of his career. Ippolito kicked in his second goal of the day and team-leading fifth of the season at 28:15, unassisted, sending OW into the half with a 3-1 lead.

It stayed that way until 46:45 when Michael Carroll scored off a pass by Stephan Zaech to close the gap to one goal. SJC-L.I.'s John Dettori tied the game at three when Terrence Dzus found him at 76:30. At 88:32, OW's Diego Mercado lined up for his second penalty kick of the season and sent the ball past the outstretched arms of SJC-L.I. keeper Peter Ryan for the eventual game-winner. Mercado's penalty kick was his second of the season

Both teams were even in shots, 17-17, while Old Westbury held an 11-8 edge in shots on target. St. Joseph's-L.I. won the corner battle, 7-5. OW keeper Pablo Diaz improved to 4-0 after making five saves while Peter Ryan took the loss with seven stops in net for the Golden Eagles.

NYU-POLY FIGHTING BLUE JAYS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to action on Wednesday, September 29 for a Skyline Conference showdown against the NYU-Poly Fighting Blue Jays. Panthers and Fighting Blue Jays are slated for a 4 p.m. kick-off in Brooklyn, New York.
