(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's volleyball earned a split on the final day of the St. Joseph's-L.I. Tournament on Saturday afternoon in Patchogue, New York.  The Panthers opened with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-12, 25-17) victory over CCNY and fell in four sets (26-24, 19-25, 21-25, 20-25) to Farmingdale State in the finale.  Old Westbury is now 16-12 on the season. 

In the first match against CCNY, the Panthers took a straight set 25-23, 25-12, 25-17 victory over the Beavers.  Ruth Vargas led the Panthers with eight kills (.533 hitting %) followed by Carlotta Pope, who nailed down a career-high seven kills (.700 hitting %).  Ashley Greene and Tynisha George added six kills each to aid the Panthers, who pounded out 36 kills throughout the match and finished with a .244 kill percentage.  Kristina Giordano handed out 20 assists.  Giordano and George each served up two aces and scooped up eight digs.  

The Panthers fell in the second match 3-1 to Farmingdale State.  Old Westbury took game one 26-24 before the Rams came back to even the score with a 25-19 victory in game two.  Farmingdale State took the next two games 25-21 and 25-20 to garner the match win.

Greene and George continued the day by slamming six kills each, brining their day total to 12 in two matches.  Kristina Giordano added 18 assists and Kimberly Catania paced Old Westbury with three aces.  Nancy Apollonio scooped up 17 digs to lead Old Westbury, followed by Catania and George, who added 11 digs each.  Ruth Vargas registered five blocks and Carlotta Pope had four.

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS “DIG PINK” MATCH AGAINST FARMINGDALE STATE RAMS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the court for the annual Breast Cancer Awareness “Dig Pink” match at home against the Farmingdale State Rams in a Skyline Conference battle on Wednesday (Oct. 19) in Old Westbury, New York.  First serve is slated for 7 p.m. from the Clark Athletic Center.
