www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) –The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's volleyball hosted the St. Joseph's Brooklyn Bears and Lehman Lightning Sunday afternoon for a non-conference tri-match in Old Westbury, New York. Old Westbury took down St. Joseph's-Brooklyn in three sets (25-9, 25-12, 25-16) before falling to Lehman, 3-0 (22-25, 24-26, 15-25). The split moves Old Westbury to 12-7 on the season.
In the opening match, Old Westbury needed just three sets to knock off the visiting St. Joseph's-Brooklyn Bears. Double-doubles from
Ashley Greene and
Kristina Giordano paced Old Westbury to victory. Greene went for 12 kills (match-high), 12 digs and two aces while Giordano finished with 18 assists, 15 digs and five aces. On the defensive front,
Kimberly Catania added 12 digs while
Ruth Vargas had four blocks (three solo). St. Joseph's-Brooklyn was led by Kim Matthews' seven kills and Kathy McCarthy's 16 digs.
Old Westbury finished with 26 kills, a .247 hitting percentage, 11 service aces and eight blocks. Meanwhile, St. Joseph's-Brooklyn earned 14 kills, a -.091 hitting percentage, three service aces, and one block. The Panthers did pick up 64 defensive digs, while the Bears collected 42 digs during the match.
Lehman took down Old Westbury in straight sets (25-22, 26-24, 25-15).
Tynisha George tallied 10 kills, seven digs and one ace to Old Westbury.
Ruth Vargas followed with seven kills and
Kristina Giordano chipped in with 23 assists and eight digs. On the defensive front, Samatha Howley posted a match-high 11 digs (career-high), followed by
Shakira Canty, who finished with nine. Shari Quiles paced Lehman with nine kills while Racine Brown and Jasmine Bermudez finished with seven and six aces, respectively. Bermudez dished out 23 assists in addition to racking up 10 digs.
Old Westbury hit .192 on the match with 27 kills and were limited to just three aces (second lowest total this season) and three blocks. Lehman finished with 28 kills, a .111 hitting percentage, 16 aces and 1.5 blocks. Old Westbury edged Lehman in digs, 52-46.
STATEN ISLAND DOLPHINS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the court for a non-conference match on the road against the Staten Island Dolphins on Tuesday (Oct. 4) in Staten Island, New York. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. from the CSI Sports & Recreation Center.
