MEN’S SOCCER HANDED SHUTOUT AT CONFERENCE LEADING ST. JOSEPH’S-L.I.

Old Westbury’s three game win streak snapped on the road

(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) –The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's soccer team dropped a 5-0 Skyline Conference decision at St. Joseph's-L.I. Tuesday afternoon at Medford Sports Complex. The loss put the Panthers at 4-8 on the season and 3-2 in conference play, while the Golden Eagles improve to 6-6 and 4-0, respectively. 

St. Joseph's-L.I. struck first in the 13th minute as Craig Ceruti notched his first goal of the season.  Michael Carroll and Doug Kane assisted on the game winner, sending a cross into the box, where Ceruti used his head for the score.  St. Joseph's-L.I. increased its lead to 2-0 in the 26th minute when John Dettori put his spot past Pablo Diaz. Dettori received a cross in the box from Joe Allessi for the score. 

In the second half, Old Westbury enjoyed more scoring chances, but could not convert.  St. Joseph's continued its scoring spree in the 50th minute as Dettori was at it again.  Dettori settled a pass from Doug Kane, who rattled the back of the net for his second score of the day.  

St. Joseph's-L.I. increased its lead to 4-0 in the 53rd minute as Dettori notched his third score of the game on an unassisted goal.  The Golden Eagles struck just 57 seconds later as William Kuhlwilm deposited his shots into the net to give SJC-L.I. a five-goal cushion as Doug Kane assisted on the goal.  Kane's assist was his third of the game. 

Pablo Diaz stopped three balls in defeat for Old Westbury as Chris Muhs made four saves to earn his fourth shutout of the season for St. Joseph's-L.I.  Old Westbury rebounded from a rough first half to outshoot St. Joseph's-L.I. in the second, 6-4.  However, St. Joseph's-L.I. finished with a 9-6 shot advantage, including 8-5 on target.  Old Westbury also enjoyed a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks for the game with all four coming in the final 45 minutes.  St. Joseph's-L.I. was dealt four yellow cards were called for 21 fouls, compared to just seven by Old Westbury. 

"BATTLE OF THE PANTHERS" UP NEXT FOR OLD WESTBURY: Old Westbury returns to the pitch for a Skyline Conference showdown at home, taking on the Purchase Panthers on Sunday (Oct. 9) in Old Westbury, New York. Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m. from Panther Park.
