SECOND HALF RUN LEADS BROOKLYN PAST WOMEN’S HOOPS

Deslyn Applewhaite registered career-highs of 25 points and 10 rebounds in defeat

BROOKLYN, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team had their 13-point halftime lead evaporate as the Brooklyn Bulldogs came away with a 72-71 victory from the West Quad Center in Brooklyn, New York.  The loss moves Old Westbury to 0-3 on the season while Brooklyn remains unbeaten at 4-0.

Old Westbury dominated the first half, outscoring Brooklyn 42-29, while shooting 42.5 percent from the field including 3-of-6 from three-point territory.  Old Westbury's Antoinette Jolly dropped in a layup to cap off an 18-2 run that built a 36-19 lead with 4:58 remaining.  Old Westbury committed 14 first half turnovers and translated into just nine points for Brooklyn, while outrebounding the Bulldogs, 42-16.  Old Westbury also held an 18-8 edge off the offensive glass, resulting in just seven second chance points. 

Following a made free-throw by Clarissa Gallagher to give OW a 58-44 lead with 13:32 on the second half clock, Brooklyn went on a 17-3 run over the next 4:22 to knot the game at 61 all on a layup by Tiffany Thompson.  Moments later, Lauren Plagainos hit the go-head free throws with 2:02 left, to give Brooklyn its first lead since the 15:17 mark in the opening half.  With Brooklyn clinging to a 72-68 lead, Deslyn Applehwaite knocked down a three-pointer to pull OW within one point with eight seconds left.  Following a missed free throw by Plagainos, Old Westbury grabbed the rebound and called timeout with five seconds remaining.  Old Westbury had an opportunity to win, but Tiffany Thompson stripped Kim Weathers with one second showing on the clock to secure the 72-71 victory.    

Deslyn Applewhaite led Old Westbury with career-highs 25 points and 10 rebounds to register her first-career double-double.  She connected on 11-of-22 from the field and tied a personal-best with four assists.  Myajha Elston (10 points, 11 rebounds) and Antoinette Jolly (10 points, 11 rebounds) also posted their first career double-doubles while Kim Weathers chipped in with 12 points.  Abigail Williams led OW with three blocks and Jolly nabbed three steals. 

Tiffany Thompson scored 18 points and grabbed 10 boards to lead Brooklyn to victory.  Nicole Francomano added 11 points and 10 assists while Lauren Plagainos chipped in with 16 points and Charnelle St. Laurent had 14.   

Old Westbury outshot Brooklyn from the field 40.3 percent (27-67) to 32.9 percent (26-79).  Old Westbury knocked down 12-of-24 from the free-throw line while Brooklyn hit 11-of-20. Old Westbury also enjoyed a 60-44 rebounding advantage, including 20-18 off the offensive glass, resulting in just 10 second chance points. Old Westbury committed 23 turnovers which Brooklyn converted into 23 points.

MEDGAR EVERS COUGARS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the hardwood on Wednesday (Nov. 30) for a non-conference road battle against the Medgar Evers Cougars. Game time is set to tip at 7 p.m. from Brooklyn, New York.
