www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team fell 77-70 in overtime to the visiting SUNYIT Wildcats on Sunday afternoon from the Clark Athletic Center. OW falls to 3-5 on the season while SUNYIT improved to 4-1.
Antoinette Jolly scored the games first points on a layup to give Old Westbury an early 2-0 lead. Cherry Nailah put SUNYIT on the board with a free-throw at 18:23 as Old Westbury led 201. Old Westbury scored nine of the next 13 points to take an 11-5 lead with 14:14 showing on the first-half clock.
Clarissa Gallagher knocked down a jumper at 8:28 to give Old Westbury at its largest lead of the game, 19-10. Old Westbury took a 30-25 advantage into the half after leading throughout the opening 20 minutes.
Old Westbury led the opening 34:58 of the game until Lyndsey Brognano connected on a three-pointer to give SUNYIT a 59-57 lead with 5:02 remaining in the second-half. Brognano sank her third consecutive triple followed by a layup from Sarah Couvillon to put SUNYIT ahead, 64-59. Old Westbury used a 6-2 run over the final 3:16 to force overtime on layups from
DeAndra Scott and
Kim Weathers followed by Weathers' three-pointer that knotted the game at 66.
SUNYIT scored first in overtime on a jumper from Ashley Schmidt with 3:51 left. Back-to-back field goals by Schmidt and Lyndsey Brognano put SUNYIT ahead, 77-66. Old Westbury scored their first overtime point on a free-throw by
DeAndra Scott to cut the deficit to 72-67 with 1:03 remaining. Brognano made a pair of free-throws to give SUNYIT a 75-67 advantage and outscored OW 11-4 in the extra frame.
DeAndra Scott led OW in scoring for the second consecutive game after pouring in 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field to go along with a career-high 16 rebounds to notch her fifth career double-double.
Kim Weathers followed with 13 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals off the bench,
Myajha Elston chipped in with eight points, eight rebounds and four steals while
Abigail Williams rejected a team-high two blocks.
Deslyn Applewhaite contributed five assists.
Lyndsey Brognano connected on six three-pointers and finished with 27 points to lead SUNYIT to victory. Ashley Scmidt scored 16 points and Sarah Couvillon had 15. Caitlin Cottell dished out a game-high six assists.
SUNYIT outshot Old Westbury from the field 29.4 percent (29-74) to 28.6 percent (27-85). Old Westbury connected on 12-of-17 from the free-throw line while SUNYIT knocked down 12-of-20. OW also enjoyed a 54-40 rebounding advantage, including 23 offensive boards that resulted in 12 second chance points. OW also converted 23 SUNYIT turnovers into 20 points.
STATEN ISLAND DOLPHINS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the hardwood for non-conference action on Thursday (Dec. 22) when they take on the Staten Island Dolphins in Old Westbury, New York. Game time is set to tip at 7 p.m. inside the Clark Athletic Center.
