OLD WESTBURY, NY (
www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – – The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball team fell 83-77 at home to the York Cardinals on Thursday afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center. The loss moves OW to 4-4 on the season while York improved to 3-9.
York jumped ahead with an early 4-0 advantage until
Omari Trebuse dropped in a layup for Old Westbury's first point. Old Westbury took a 17-12 lead off the power of a 10-4 run from 15:45 to 13:21. Moments later, Shamir Wilkinson's layup gave York a 25-22 lead with 8:02 showing on the first-half clock. Old Westbury responded with a 9-0 run from 7:45 to 6:12 to grab a 31-25 lead. William Holley sank a pair of free-throws with three seconds left in the half to send York into the break with a 41-39 lead.
Old Westbury came out of the break flat, hitting just 3-of-13 over the opening 8:03 as York outscored OW 16-7 to take a 57-46 lead.
Rashawn McCarthy threw down a dunk at 11:41 to kick-start a 14-4 Panther run over the next 2:23 to pull within one point, 61-60. York countered with a 16-5 run from 6:22 to 2:07 to go up 77-65. OW closed out the game with a 12-6 run, but were unable to overcome the 12-point deficit.
Old Westbury's
Kerel Mitchell poured in a career-high 27 points to lead all scorers. Mitchell connected on 10-of-19 from the field to go along with six rebounds.
Rashawn McCarthy followed with 14 points and
Everard Bisnauth chipped in with nine.
Dayshawn Long dished out five assists and Joshua Hill contributed six points, six rebounds and OW's lone block off the bench.
York registered three players in double figures led by Tony Vails 22 points (10-14 FG). Shamir Wilkinson had 18 points (8-12 FG) and 11 rebounds while William Holley went for 12 points and eight boards off the bench.
York outshot Old Westbury from the field 47.5 percent (28-59) to 39.7 percent (31-78). Old Westbury connected on 12-of-43 from three-point land while York knocked down 3-of-10. York also enjoyed a 44-33 rebounding advantage.
MORAVIAN GREYHOUNDS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the hardwood for non-conference action on Monday (Jan. 2) when they take on the Moravian Greyhounds in the opening round of the 34th annual Moravian Greyhound Starters Classic in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Game time is set to tip at 5:30 p.m. inside Johnston Hall.
