Samantha Clancy to lift the Panthers to a 3-1 road victory over the Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders Wednesday evening at Alumni Field.
Clancy registered her second multiple-goal game of her career and now has nine goals in 23 career games at Old Westbury. In addition to Clancy's goals, freshman
Stephanie Maybie notched her first career tally, while sophomore
JoAnna Kettell had an assist. Freshman goalkeeper
Caitlin Thomas improved to 1-2 on the season with five saves in the victory for Old Westbury. Danielle Griscom was charged with the loss for Rutgers-Newark as she allowed three goals while making six stops.
Old Westbury struck first when
Samantha Clancy found the back of the net at the 27:46 mark on an assists by
JoAnna Kettell. The Scarlet Raiders responded juts under nine minutes later as Liana Abreau scored her tenth goal of the season by putting home a penalty kick out of the reach of the Panthers' goalkeeper at 36:33. It remained an evenly played match for the remainder of the half as the two teams went into the break locked in at a 1-1 tie.
Old Westbury came out attacking in the second half, outshooting Rutgers-Newark, 9-8.
Stephanie Maybie put away the game-winner in the 52nd minute when she chased down the ball in the left corner and blasted a laser past Rutgers-Newark keeper Danielle Griscom. Clancy tacked on an insurance goal at the 82:06 mark as she settled a loose ball off a cross and tapped into the back of the net.
Old Westbury held a 9-6 advantage in shots on goal, despite Rutgers-Newark owning a 21-14 edge in shot attempts. Rutgers-Newark registered a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks.
NEW JERSEY CITY GOTHIC KNIGHTS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the pitch for a non-conference battle at home as they entertain the New Jersey City Gothic Knights on Sunday (Sept. 18) in Old Westbury, New York. Kick-off for the home opener is slated for 1 p.m. from Panther Park.
