(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's volleyball team opened the season at the LaRoche College Tournament on Saturday morning in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, going 2-2 on the day. First-year head coach Melissa Rudy came away with a 3-0 (25-6, 25-7, 25-7) victory in the opener over Penn State DuBois. Old Westbury fell to Penn State Fayette, 3-0 (25-16, 25-7, 25-9) and LaRoche, 3-2 (25-9, 18-25, 23-25, 25-20, 8-15) before taking a 3-0 (31-29, 25-12, 25-14) victory over Penn State Greater Allegheny to conclude the day.

In the season opening sweep over Penn State DuBois, Nancy Apollonio had six aces and eight assists while Kristina Giordano went four five assists and four aces to lead Old Westbury to victory. Tonya Miller and Corrine Protasiewicz nailed down four kills apiece and Kimberly Catania had a team-best three digs. Old Westbury had 16 kills in 25 total attempts to hit .560 on the match. The Panthers also had 22 service aces to just one serving error.

Against Penn State Fayette, Old Westbury had 14 kills, 13 errors in 88 total attempts for a .011 hitting percentage in the three set loss. Nancy Apollonio led the defense with 11 digs followed by Tynisha George, who had eight. Kimberly Catania served up a pair of aces while Kristina Giordnao dished out 10 assists. Ashley Greene led the squad with four kills.

Old Westbury hit at a 27 percent rate with 28 kills, 25 errors in 111 total attempts in a five set hart-breaking loss to LaRoche. Ashley Greene and Tynisha George both went for eight kills in the match followed by Tonya Miller's four. Kristina Giordano was back to her normal self, handing out 24 assists with six aces. George and Kimberly Catania registered double-digit digs, scooping up 12 and 10, respectively while Nancy Apollonio followed with eight. Ashley Greene and Tonya Miller both finished with three solo and one assisted blocks each.

OW's 23 kills in 63 total attempts were enough to close out the day with asweep over Penn State Allegheny. Ruth Vargas made her debut, nailing down eight kills in 16 total attempts to hit .375. Tynisha George followed with six kills and Ashley Greene had five. Nancy Apollonio recorded a career-high 19 assists to go along with a pair of aces. Greene led OW with four digs as Shakira Canty dug up three.
The day marked the official debut for a pair of Old Westbury players. Corrine Protasiewicz and Ruth Vargas both saw their first career action in a Panther uniform.
JOHN JAY BULLDOGS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the court for a non-conference road battle with the John Jay Bulldogs on Tuesday (Sept. 6) in New York, New York. First serve is set for 7 p.m. from the Doghouse in Haaren Hall.
