NEWARK, NJ (
www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's soccer team was unable to overcome a 2-0 half-time deficit and fell short in a 2-1 non-conference road loss Monday evening to the Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders from Alumni Field. The loss stopped Old Westbury's two- game win streak and now stand at 3-11 on the season while Rutgers-Newark improved to 9-5.
Rutgers-Newark opened the scoring in the 18th minute as Ardian Djeka used his head to score off Gabriel Avans corner kick for an early 1-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, Robi Rosario doubled Rutgers-Newark's advantage, scoring off a header for the eventual game-winner in the 20th minute. Diego Moraes was credited with the assist after setting up the opportunity to send Rutgers-Newark into the half with a two goal lead.
Tana Weekes scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 77th minute after heading in a rebound to make it a 2-1 game.
Michael Bayne was credited with his second-career assist, first of the season.
In the end, Rutgers-Newark held the advantage in shots (21-10), shots on goal (9-3) and corner kicks (9-3). Old Westbury goalie
Peter Sicardi made seven stops in defeat. Brady O'Connor played a scoreless first-half in goal for Rutgers-Newark and Baltej Singh allowed Old Westbury's lone goal while recording two saves in the second-half.
NYU-POLY JAYS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the pitch for a Skyline Conference battle on Wednesday evening, taking on the NYU-Poly Jays in Brooklyn, New York. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m. from Aviator Field.
