www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team dropped an 78-57 road contest to Skyline Conference opponent, Mount Saint Mary, Saturday afternoon from the Kaplan Center. With the loss, the Panthers (1-4) fell to 0-2 in conference play while Mount Saint Mary (3-3) improved to 2-0.
For the second consecutive game, Old Westbury fell behind by double-digits in the opening minutes. Mount Saint Mary jumped out to a 12-2 lead with 14:11 left in the first-half. Mount Saint Mary went up 26-6 as Amanda Smith dropped in a layup with 8:57 remaining. Old Westbury's
Nikki Alexander hit a jumper to make it 36-12 while Mount Saint Mary responded with a 14-0 run to close out the final 3:57 of the half.
The Knights continued to assert control, opening the first 1:56 of the second-half on another 10-2 run to lead 60-14, their largest of the game. Old Westbury got within 21, 78-57, on a three-pointer by
Raven Pentz to close out the game. Old Westbury used a 32-8 run to close out the final 11:48.
Raven Pentz and
DeAndra Scott were the high-scorers for Old Westbury after dropping 10 points. Pentz nabbed a career-high four steals while
Egypt Calier recorded three.
Antoinette Jolly chipped in with five assists and two steals.
Abigail Williams pulled-down a team-best five rebounds.
Amanda Smith led Mount Saint Mary with 15 points (5-of-8 FG), five assists and five steals. Rachel Perrone (14 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks), Lauren Romao (14 points) and Becky Metzger (12 points, 5 assists) followed with double-digit scoring.
Old Westbury struggled in the first-half, shooting just 6-of-22 from the field for 27.3 percent, but shot 18-of-33 in the second-half to finish the game at 43.6 percent (24-of-55). Old Westbury shot 42.9 percent (3-of-7) from beyond the arc and 54.5 percent (6-of-11) from the free-throw line. Mount Saint Mary held the shooting advantage, connecting on 50 percent (28-of-56) from the floor, 55.6 percent (10-of-18) from three-point range and 70.6 percent (12-of-17) from the charity stripe. Mount Saint Mary also held a 39-28 rebounding advantage, converting 14 offensive boards into 18 points, and 25 Panther turnovers into 28 points.
SUNY COBLESKILL FIGHTING TIGERS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the hardwood for a non-conference road battle on Thursday (Dec. 6) evening, taking on the SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tigers in Cobleskill, New York. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m. from Bouck Hall.
