www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) –The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball team 80-76 on the road Wednesday evening to the #21 NYU Violets from the Jerome S. Coles Center. The loss snapped Old Westbury's four game win streak, making them 4-2 on the season while NYU improved to 5-1.
Old Westbury jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the opening minutes on a three pointer by
Rashawn McCarthy and a
Tyrik Tucker jumper. NYU replied by launching an 18-6 run from 17:26 to 9:53 to take a seven point lead (18-11). Old Westbury scored eight of the next 10 points to pull within one, 20-19, with 6:55 remaining in the half. NYU countered with a 17-7 run to take a 37-26 lead with 1:33 left. Rashawn McCarthy connected on a long ball from 35 feet out as time expired to head into the break down six, 40-34.
NYU opened the second half by scoring five of the first seven points. Old Westbury took a brief 56-55 lead off a jumper by
Rashawn McCarthy with 8:59 left on the clock. NYU answered with a Carl Jaffe three pointer to grab the lead for good, kick starting a 10-0 run as the Violets led 65-56 with 5:25 remaining. Old Westbury chipped away at the deficit and a triple by
Omari Trebuse with 1:11 left to make it 71-69 in favor of NYU. With 14 seconds remaining,
Kerel Mitchell converted a three point play to bring Old Westbury within two, 76-74. NYU shot 11-of-13 from the line over the final 1:15 to hold on for the victory.

Rashawn McCarthy scored 14 of his team best 27 points in the first half and finished the game shooting 8-of-14 from the field to go along with five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Tyrik Tucker and
Kerel Mitchell followed with 15 points apiece while Tucker grabbed a team best seven boards.
Carl Yaffe's 20 points led the way for NYU. Kyle Stockmal (16 points), Ryan Tana (14 points), Max Win (14 points) and Devin Karch (13 points) followed in double-digit scoring. Yaffe added 12 boards and Wein grabbed 11 while Yaffe dished out six assists and Stockmal nabbed six steals.
Old Westbury connected on 39.3 percent (24-61) shooting from the field, 47.4 percent (9-19) from three point range and 70.4 percent (19-27) from the free throw line. NYU shot 39.7 percent (23-58) from the floor, 33.3 percent (10-30) from beyond the arc and 80 percent (24-30) from the charity stripe. NYU outrebounded Old Westbury, 50-31, of which 16 offensive boards were turned into 15 second chance points. Old Westbury committed 16 turnovers, which resulted in 21 NYU points.
