www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's soccer team scored a pair of goals in the second half to overcome a 2-1 halftime deficit, defeating the visiting Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders 3-2 on Wednesday afternoon in Old Westbury, New York. With the home opening win, Old Westbury improves to 1-3 on the season while sending Rutgers-Newark's record to 1-5.
Cristina Estremera broke the scoring ice in the seventh minute to put give Rutgers-Newark and early one goal advantage. Old Westbury evened the score just 39 seconds later with
JoAnna Kettell's first goal of the season, assisted by
Stephanie Maybie. Mercedes Lois scored in the 37th minute to take back the lead for Rutgers-Newark, heading into the half up 2-1.
In the second half,
Cristina Kettell slotted a pass to a streaking
Stephanie Maybie in the 49th minute to knot the game at two-all. Maybie then delivered the game-winner as
Kassandra Franco found her for her third goal of the season. Maybie's two goal match was the second of her career.
Heather Grosso made a career-high six saves in net for Old Westbury while Kelsey Benoit stopped five shots in defeat for Rutgers-Newark. Old Westbury also held a 21-17 advantage in shots, with eight on goal.
MONTCLAIR STATE RED HAWKS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the pitch for a non-conference battle on Friday evening, taking on the Montclair State Red Hawks in Montclair, New Jersey. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m. from Pittser Field.
