OLD WESTBURY, NY (
www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) –The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's soccer team, playing their fourth game in a week, didn't show any signs of fatigue as the squad scored two goals late in the second half en route to a 2-0 victory over the Staten Island Dolphins on Tuesday afternoon from Panther Park. With the win, the Panthers improve to 2-5 on the season. The Dolphins meanwhile, drop to 4-2 on the year.
Both teams were unable to find the back of the net in the first half, but Old Westbury held a 5-1 shot advantage while Staten Island had a 2-0 edge in corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes.
In the second period, Old Westbury continued with the same offensive intensity from the first half, outshooting Staten Island, 7-3. It wasn't until the 75:04 mark when
JoAnna Kettell received a pass from
Cristina Kettell and scored her third goal of the season to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. The goal proved to be the game-winner, the second of her career. Old Westbury wasn't done, as
Stephanie Maybie came through for the Panthers just 1:10 later.
Allison Pirone sent a ball to Maybie, scoring her team-leading fifth goal of the season to extend the lead to 2-0.
At the end of the day, the Panthers held a 12-4 edge in shots and 6-2 on target, while Staten Island had the advantage in corner kicks (5-0). Old Westbury goalie
Caitlin Thomas made two saves and tied Chynna Pitlock for the program record with her sixth career shutout.
MOUNT SAINT MARY KNIGHTS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the pitch for a Skyline Conference opener on Saturday afternoon, taking on the Mount Saint Mary Knights in Newburgh, New York. Kick-off is slated for 12 p.m. from Kaplan Field.
