OLD WESTBURY, NY (
www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's soccer team conceded their second conference loss of the season Friday afternoon, losing to the Mount Saint Mary Knights (9-4, 4-0 Skyline) 1-0 at NYIT's President's Stadium. The Panthers now sit at 8-6 in all competitions and 3-2 in conference play.
Old Westbury weathered an early storm, as the Knights pounced on the Panthers immediately. Keeper
Caitlin Thomas came up huge making a couple of highlight-reel saves, but in the 41st minute Mount Saint Mary broke through.
Shanice Robe broke free of the Panthers defense and received a ball in front of goal. Her initial shot was saved by Thomas, but Robe was there for the rebound and buried the ball into a wide open net.
Old Westbury made it to half time down just one despite being outshot 15-4 in the first half.
The second half saw more of the same, though, as the Panthers continued to struggle to find offense. They only managed three shots in the second frame, and were outshot by the count of 10-3. The final shot tally was 25-7 (12-6 on target) in favor of Mount Saint Mary.
Despite the loss, Thomas was able to set a career-high in saves with 11. The junior has started every game this season and has come up huge on a number of occasions.
Top performers for the Panthers were
Stephanie Maybie and
JoAnna Kettell. Maybie, who played sweeper, did well to contain Robe and keep the Panthers in the game, while Kettell generated the team's best scoring opportunities.
COLLEGE OF STATEN ISLAND DOLPHINS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to action on Thursday (Oct. 17) when they visit the College of Staten Island Dolphins. Kick-off is set for 4 p.m. from CSI Soccer Complex.Â
