Old Westbury moves to 1-4 in conference play with setbacks against Purchase and NYU-Poly

BROOKLYN, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's volleyball took it to the court Saturday afternoon for a Skyline Conference tri-match at Jacobs Gymnasium in Brooklyn, New York.  Old Westbury dropped the opener in straight sets to the Purchase Panthers (6-8, 2-3 Skyline), 25-21, 25-23 and 25-22 before failing to close out the host NYU-Poly Fighting Jays (3-12, 2-4 Skyline) with a five-set heartbreaker (25-18, 25-23, 15-25, 23-25, 13-15).  Old Westbury is now 4-13 overall and 1-4 in conference play. 

Old Westbury combined to hit at a season-best rate .333 (31 kills-7 errors-72 total attacks) while Purchase earned the victory despite hitting .151 (36 kills-20 errors-106 total attacks).  Jocelyn Small used 12 kills on 22 swings to hit .500 in addition to scooping up 13 digs to lead Old Westbury with her third straight double-double.  Small also had a pair of aces and blocks.  Mudeline Derisma served up four aces and Kimberly Catania dished out 14 assists to go along with seven digs and six kills.  Rayn Brown added 10 assists and eight kills while Samantha Howley chipped in with 10 digs. 

Olivia Schoeller's 25 assists teamed up with 14 kills by Alicia McCarthy to pace the Purchase offense.  McCarthy added 12 digs while three of her teammates including Schoeller finished with 10 digs.  Alex Lally recorded five of the 11 aces for Purchase.

Old Westbury nailed down a season-best 59 kills while outhitting NYU-Poly, .277 (59 kills-20 errors-141 total attacks) to .094 (42 kills-23 errors-203 total attacks).  Old Westbury also out served the Fighting Jays, 10-4 in aces.  Brown used 21 kills (career-high), 15 assists and 10 digs to post her first career triple double for Old Westbury.  Small followed with 14 kills and 28 digs (career-high).  Catania also double dipped with 30 assists and 13 kills while Derisma went for a career-best nine kills.  Allie Giancola contributed 30 digs and three aces and Howley dug up a personal high of 21 digs.  Jessica Wagner also joined in on the action by tallying a career-high 10 digs. 

Alyssa Niquette's 17 kills, 12 assists and 10 digs paced NYU-Poly to victory.  Stephanie Serrano also added 12 kills and 16 digs for the Fighting Jays.   

HUNTER HAWKS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to action on Thursday (Oct. 17) when they host the Hunter Hawks for a non-conference battle.  First serve is set for 6 p.m. from the Clark Athletic Center.
