BRONX, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's volleyball lost on the road to the Lehman Lightning, 3-0 (10-25, 20-25, 16-25), on Tuesday evening in a non-conference affair from The APEX. The loss pushed the Panthers to 4-11 on the season while Lehman improved to 14-5.
Jocelyn Small hit a team-best .143 to register five kills while scooping up 12 digs to pace Old Westbury. Samantha Howley paced the defense with 15 digs and Allie Giancola chipped in with 10. Rayn Brown went for five kills while Kimberly Catania directed the offense with seven assists. Mudeline Derisma served up a team-leading two aces.
Jessica Gonzalez registered match-high's of 22 assists and four aces while Imani Dubois led the Lehman offense with eight kills. Salveira Gonzalez racked up 10 digs and Jo-Marie Aquino had a pair of solo blocks.
Both team traded a pair of points to start the match knotted at 2-2 before the Lightning struck with a 12-3 run to go up 14-5. Lehman owned a match-high .421 hitting percentage, nailing down nine kills with just one error in 19 swings as the Panthers struggled hitting just -.208 (4 kills-9 errors-24 total attacks).
In the second set, Old Westbury started fast and jumped out to a 4-1 lead capped by Derisma's ace and a kills by Brown. The lead was short lived for the Panthers as Lehman responded with a 14-5 run to take a 15-9 lead. Old Westbury battled back to make it a three-point set before Lehman answered by scoring 10 of the next 18 points to take the set. Old Westbury improved its hitting to -.043 (6 kills-7 errors-23 total attacks) while Lehman's percentage dipped to .097 (9 kills-6 errors-31 total attacks).
In set three Lehman took an early 7-2 lead. Old Westbury attempted a comeback and briefly held a one-point lead (12-11) off a 10-4 run. Lehman gradually pulled away with a 10-0 run to take a commanding 21-12 lead. Leading 21-14, Lehman scored four of the final six points of the set to win the match, three-sets-to-none.
PURCHASE PANTHERS AND NYU-POLY FIGHTING JAYS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to action on Saturday (Oct. 12) when the they travel to Brooklyn, New York for a Skyline Conference tri-match. The Panthers open with the Purchase Panthers at 1 p.m. followed by a clash with the NYU-Poly Fighting Jays at 3 p.m. from Jacobs Gymnasium.
