@OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball Drops Season-Opener to Arcadia

Three Panthers scored in double digits

MAHWAH, NJ (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College of Old Westbury women's basketball team tipped off their 2013-14 season Friday evening in the Roadrunner Tip-Off Tournament at the Bill Bradley Sports and Recreation Complex in Mahwah, New Jersey.  Despite having three players score in double-digits, the Panthers fell to the Arcadia Knights, 94-72.

Old Westbury (0-1) concludes the weekend Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in the consolation game against the host Ramapo Roadrunners, while the Knights (1-0) will take on the SUNYIT Wildcats at 3 p.m. in the championship game.

The Knights' torrid hot-shooting in the first half was the story of the contest.  Arcadia shot at a 51% clip (21-for-41) from the perimeter to propel them to a resounding half time advantage.

The Knights were led by a game-high 20 points by Victoria Roukas as teammates Mary Badeen, Samantha Caligiuri, and Maureen Fiocca notched double-digits for the Knights.

DeAndra Scott collected a double-double with 17 points and ten rebounds to lead Old Westbury.  Raven Pentz and Clarissa Gallagher scored 16 and 15 points, respectively.  Pentz connected on a career-best four three-point field goals while Gallagher followed with three.  Nikki Alexander tied a career-high with two blocked shots while Re'auna Dorner nabbed a team-best two steals.

In the opening two minutes of action, the Knights jumped out to an 8-0 lead.  The Panthers managed to cut the deficit in half, 10-6, at the 16:56 mark on consecutive treys by Gallagher and Scott.  In the following 2:53 minutes of play, Arcadia went on an 11-2 burst to take a 21-8 lead.  Old Westbury was within eight, 21-13, courtesy of a trey by Pentz, however, in less than two minutes, Arcadia quickly mounted another 11-2 spurt to take a 17-point lead, 32-15, with 9:43 remaining.  Throughout the remainder of the game, Old Westbury could not get back within single digits.
