NEWBURGH, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's volleyball team ended the 2013 season with a three set Skyline Conference setback against the Mount Saint Mary Knights on the road Sunday afternoon from Kaplan Center. With the loss, Old Westbury concluded the season with a 6-19 overall record, going 2-7 in conference play. Mount Saint Mary improved to 16-19 on the season and 6-3 against the conference.
Old Westbury made a valiant effort to capture a win in its final match as the Panthers recorded its second highest blocking total of the season, finishing with four and a half blocks. The Panthers enjoyed their best hitting set of the match in the third with a .065 (9 kills-7 errors-31 total attacks) attack percentage and finished the day hitting -.032 (19 kills-22 errors-total attacks).
Mount Saint Mary hit .147 (37 kills-21 errors-109 total attacks) for the day while hitting a match high .162 (16 kills-10 errors-37 total attacks) in the opening set.
Rayn Brown had a Panther best seven kills and
Jocelyn Small chipped in with three solo blocks and one assisted block. Brown's seven kills gave her 197 for the season, an increase of 48 from the 2012 season. Small also added four kills finish the season with 203 and her career at 526.
Kimberly Catania turned in a nine assist-three ace performance to go along with three kills to give her a career-high 179 for the season (544 career) while
Allie Giancola scooped up a team-best 17 digs.
Samantha Howley reached double digits in digs for the 25 time of her career, finishing with 11 to end her career with 700.
Claire Scully's 21 assists captained the Knight offensive as Kayla Kurka nailed down nine kills. Kurka and Kaitlin O'Brien chipped in with three aces and Jen Gries recorded 16 digs.
Old Westbury scored first to take an early lead and last held the advantage at 8-7. Mount Saint Mary answered with an 8-4 spurt to take a 16-11 lead. Old Westbury pulled within three points, at 17-14, before the Knights scored eight of the next 14 points to take first set, 25-20.
In the second, Mount Saint Mary scored the opening three points before Old Westbury scored nine of the next 14 points to take a 9-8 lead. The Knights replied with an 8-0 run to go up 16-9 before closing out the set with a 25-15 win.
Old Westbury did not go down without a fight as the Panthers roared out of the third set gates. Catania served up aces 207 and 208 of her career to spark the Panthers to an early 5-0 lead. Old Westbury held the lead through the first 19 points (10-9), but Mount Saint Mary used a 5-0 run of its own to take the lead for good, 12-10. Howley sliced the Panther deficit in half with a kill to make it 12-11 before Mount Saint Mary pulled away with a 13-7 run to close out the match for a 25-18 third set final.
The match also concludes the fine careers for seniors Catania (2010-13), Howley (2010-13), Small (2012-13) and Mudeline Derimsa (2012-13).
