MASPETH, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury benefited from an own goal in the 21st minute to earn a 2-1 road win over the Baruch Bearcats on Monday evening from the Metropolitan Oval. The win improves Old Westbury to 3-2 while the Bearcats dropped to 1-5.
Adan Cruz-Velasquez stretched his goal scoring streak to three games with his fourth tally of the season in the sixth minute to break a scoreless match. Anthony Ippolito recorded the assist on the play, finding Cruz-Velasquez from 25 yards out for his first helper of the season. Old Westbury doubled its advantage in the 21st minute when Baruch inadvertently knocked in a goal to put Old Westbury up 2-0. Down by two goals, Baruch's Victor Tlepshev settled Kevin Romero's ball in the box and knocked it pass a stretched out Marcelo Guardado to slice the Bearcat deficit in half.
At the end of 90 minutes, the score would not change despite Old Westbury holding the advantage in shots (20-13) and corner kicks (4-1).
Angelo DiMatteo fired a match-high six shots and Scott Carey followed with five. Guardado (3-1) made six saves to earn his third win of the season while his counterpart Helder Correia (1-4) stopped five shots in defeat.
RUTGERS-NEWARK SCARLET RAIDERS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the pitch for a non-conference battle on Wednesday afternoon, when they play host to the visiting Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders. Kick-off is slated for 4 p.m. from Panther Park.
