STATEN ISLAND, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College of Old Westbury men's soccer team battled the Staten Island Dolphins on Monday afternoon in a non-conference tilt. Anthony Ippolito netted two second-half scores, 11 minutes apart, to lead the Panthers to a 2-1 victory over the Dolphins. Old Westbury improves to 4-3-1 on the year, while the Dolphins drop to 1-7-1 overall.
Old Westbury goalie
Peter Sicardi and Staten Island's Antonio Lynch maintained a blank sheet for the first 58 minutes of play. Sicardi made nine saves and Lynch stopped six shots on the afternoon.
The Panthers broke the scoring ice in the 59th minute, when
DJ Stock dribbled the ball up the right flank and found Ippolito inside the 18-yard box. He corralled the ball and chipped the ball right over the head of Lynch, giving Old Westbury a 1-0 edge.
The Panthers' doubled their advantage to, 2-0, in the 70th minute of play. After Staten Island misfired on two consecutive shots, Old Westbury got the ball inside Staten Island's half. The ball was loose in front of the net and Ippolito quickly fired the ball for his second goal of the contest. The hosts trimmed the deficit to 2-1, in the 73rd minute when Michele Kissi scored on a header. The comeback was thwarted by the Panthers' stingy defense, as they did not allow Staten Island to have a shot on goal in the final 17-minutes of action.
Both teams drew even in shots, 16-16, while Staten Island held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.
MOUNT SAINT MARY KNIGHTS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury will return to Skyline Conference play on Saturday (Sept. 28) to take on the visiting Mount Saint Mary Knights. Kick-off is slated for 12 p.m. from Panther Park.
