OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's volleyball returned home to take on the CCNY Beavers after playing the last seven on the road. CCNY won the opening sets 25-13 and 25-8 before Old Westbury forced a fourth set with a 25-19 win. CCNY claimed victory with a 25-18 fourth set final to improve to 6-6 on the season while Old Westbury moved to 2-7.
CCNY opened the match with a 5-0 lead off the power of three service aces by Joanne Ling. Old Westbury trailed by as many as 12 during the set as CCNY used a 7-2 run to earn the victory. CCNY had a strong second set, leading from start to finish which included a 6-0 run to close out the set as the Beavers hit a match-high .526 with 10 kills in 19 swings. Old Westbury turned things around in the third set with a match-best .190 hitting percentage on seven kills in 21 swings. With the score knotted at 17-17, Kimberly Catania served up two of her five aces on the match to spark the Panthers to scoring eight of the next 10 points to push a fourth set. CCNY's Joanne Ling served up 13 straight points to open the set to put Old Westbury in a deep hole. The Panthers clawed their way back to pull within five points by scoring 18 of the next 28 points, making it a 23-18 contest. CCNY regrouped and rattled off the next two points to claim the four-set victory.
Catania and Rayn Brown each nailed down seven kills and dished out 10 and nine assist, respectively, to pace the Panthers. Mudeline Derisma added four kills and two aces while Jocelyn Small chipped in with five kills. Allie Giancola scooped up a team-best 19 digs while Small followed with nine.
Saye Chantl-Joseph racked up 18 kills and Leticia Marotti tallied 16 kills to lead CCNY. Victoria Del Toro handed out a match-high 39 assists. The Beavers were led defensively by Veralucia Quispe, Kathlen Dos Santos and Ling, who registered 15, 12 and 10 digs, respectively.
Old Westbury recorded their second-best ace total of the season, finishing with eight compared to CCNY's 14.
SAGE GATORS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to action at home on Saturday (Sept. 28) when the Sage Gators come to town for a Skyline Conference opener. First serve is slated for 3 p.m. from the Clark Athletic Center.
