OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's volleyball team dropped their Skyline Conference opener in three sets to the visiting Sage Gators on Saturday afternoon from the Clark Athletic Center. Sage (6-13) used 25-15, 25-12 and 25-19 set win to earn open conference play at 1-0 while sending the Panthers (2-8) to 0-1.
Sage came out strong with hitting percentages of .515 and .370 in the first two sets, respectively. The Panthers found themselves in a 19-7 hole in the third set and responded with a 12-4 run to make it a 23-19 game. Sage answered with the final two points to close out the match.
Old Westbury finished the match with 22 kills and a hitting percentage of .093 while the Gators finished with a hitting percentage of .340 and 47 kills. Sage led the blocking department with five while Old Westbury recorded a season best four.
The Panthers were led by Kimberly Catania, who finished with eight kills and Rayn Brown's seven. Allie Giancola took charge of the defensive efforts recording 14 digs while Jocelyn Small followed with 11 in addition to putting up two blocks.
Sage was led by Helen Putriment's 17 kills and 14 digs. Joanie Cooney ran the offense with a match-high 32 assists.
MONTCLAIR STATE RED HAWKS TRI-MATCH UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to action on Saturday (Oct. 5) when the they take on the John Jay Bloodhounds (1 p.m.) and Montclair State Red Hawks (3 p.m.) from the Panzer Athletic Center in Montclair, New Jersey.
