OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY Old Westbury women's soccer team defeated the Briarcliffe Bulldogs by the score of 7-0 Tuesday afternoon from Panther Park in their first match of the season.

Star forwards JoAnna Kettell and Stephanie Maybie picked up where they left off last season scoring two goals apiece. Maybie opened the scoring in the 11th minute, when she headed home a Lucia Mejia cross from the right side. Kettell banged in her first of the season three minutes later to close out the first half scoring.

Maybie and Kettell put the Panthers up 4-0 early in the second half before Emily Winberry, Lillian Alvarez and Michelle Ventimiglia increased the lead to 7-0 with their first career goals.

The Panthers' success could be attributed to their organized midfield play, led by freshmen Mejia and Edania Martinez. Always pressuring the ball, the midfield buried the Bulldogs in their own half of the pitch and created dozens of turnovers. As a result, the Panthers outshot the Bulldogs 47-1.

Keeper Caitlin Thomas was forced to make her only save of the match in the 46th minute.

FDU-FLORHAM UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the pitch for a non-conference battle on Saturday afternoon, taking on the visiting FDU Florham Devils. Kick-off is slated for 12 p.m. from Panther Park.
