@OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball battles Yeshiva in Skyline Conference opener

Old Westbury set to host two-time defending conference champion Purchase on Saturday

NEW YORK, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball opened its Skyline Conference schedule on the road Thursday evening with an 81-69 loss to the Yeshiva Maccabees from Max Stern Athletic Center.  Old Westbury now stands at 0-6 on the season while Yeshiva improved to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

Both teams exchanged leads in the early going before Kaleem Edwards's tip-in sparked a 14-3 Panther run from 16:12 to 10:46 to take a 21-12 lead.  With Old Westbury clinging to a 31-23 advantage with 5:25 showing on the first-half clock, Benjy Ritholtz connected on a three ball to ignite a 13-1 run to put Yeshiva in front by four with 1:14 remaining.  Old Westbury answered with a triple by Omari Trebuse and a Justin Mize layup to grab a brief 37-36 lead with 21 seconds left.  Yeshiva responded with a Ritholtz jumper in the closing seconds to take a 38-37 lead into the half.

Yeshiva took control of the game for the opening 6:31 of the second half, using a 13-4 spurt to go up 51-41.  The Panthers clawed their way back into the game, scoring eight-unanswered points from 12:10-10:27 to trim the deficit to one point (53-52).  Yeshiva responded with an 11-2 run from 9:50-5:39 to go back up by 10 points.  Jaquan Potter kept Old Westbury in the game late in the second half, connecting on three pointers at 5:39 and 3:08 to bring Old Westbury within four points (68-64).  Yeshiva went up by as many as 14 points down the stretch as the Maccabees outscored Old Westbury 13-5 over the final 2:21 to secure the victory.

Trebuse's 18 points (3-7 3FG) led three other Panthers in double-digit scoring.  Mark Gjonlekaj followed with 17 points, while Potter and Edwards poured in 13 and 10, respectively.  Potter and Trebuse each contributed three steals, while Potter rejected two of Old Westbury's four shots on the night.  Gjonlekaj tied a career-high with four assists.

Shelby Rosenberg racked up game-highs of 25 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots to pace Yeshiva to victory.  Rosenberg also added five assists while Shake Weiss dished out a game-high seven helpers.  Ritholtz scored 19 points, hitting on all three of his shots from beyond the arc.  Michael Berg chipped in with 10 points.

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 41.9 percent from the field (26-62), 33.3 percent from three-point territory (8-24) and 60 percent from the free-throw line (9-15) while Yeshiva knocked down 58.8 percent from the floor (30-51), 50 percent from beyond the arc (6-12) and 75 percent from the charity stripe (15-20).  Yeshiva won the boards battle, 35-28, and also held the advantage in assists (19-14) and blocks (5-4) while Old Westbury totaled a 10-5 edge in steals.
