@OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball wins SUNY battle at Purchase, 75-42

Old Westbury scored four in double figures to claim Saturday’s big Skyline Conference win


PURCHASE, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team shot 47.5 percent in the second half to capture a 75-42 Skyline Conference road victory against the Purchase Panthers in Saturday's "Battle of the SUNY Panthers".  With the win, Old Westbury (8-8) evens up at 2-2 in conference play while sending Purchase (2-11) to 0-4.  Entering the game, Purchase had won the previous four meetings.

Both teams struggled offensively in opening half and were unable to create separation.  Neither team held a lead more than four points until the closing moments of the half.  Old Westbury and Purchase combined for five lead changes as the visiting Panthers used a 10-1 run to close out the final 2:52 to take a 25-18 lead into the half.  Old Westbury shot 27.8 percent (10-36 FG) and turned the ball over 12 times while Purchase hit just 18.6 percent (8-43 FG).

Old Westbury picked up right where they left off, opening the second half with a Clarissa Gallagher three pointer to extend its lead to 10 (28-18) just 16 seconds into play.  Moments later, Crystal Barnes dropped in a layup to put Old Westbury up 31-18 before Kristine Viven's free throw ended the visitors 16-1 run.  Gallagher connected on a three ball with 12:38 left to push the lead to 21 points (49-28).  Old Westbury then took a 26-point lead (60-34) off Nikki Alexander's jumper with 7:56 showing on the second-half clock.  Old Westbury's lead reached 33 (75-42) as Imani Lariosa's layup with 21 seconds remaining closed out the scoring books.           

Barnes scored a game-high 18 points (8-14 FG) to go along with 14 rebounds, four blocks and three steals to record her seventh double-double of the season.  Gallagher followed with 12 points and tied a career-high with 11 rebounds to record her third career double-double.  Pentz added 10 points, seven rebounds and nine assists (season high) while Lariosa scored a career-high 11 points (3-6 3FG) off the bench.  Chloe Mellon chipped in with 10 rebounds.
Viven and Elizabeth Osowiecki each scored 11 points to lead Purchase.

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 38.2 percent from the field (29-76), 32 percent from three-point range (8-25) and 60 percent from the free-throw line (9-15) while Purchase shot 22 percent from the floor (18-82), 15.4 percent from beyond the arc (2-13) and 40 percent from the stripe (4-10).  Old Westbury also won the boards battle, 63-36, scoring 18 second-chance points off 19 offensive rebounds.  Old Westbury also held the advantage in assists (18-10) and blocks (8-4) while Purchase nabbed 11 steals, compared to Old Westbury's seven.     

SAGE GATORS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 24) when they host the Sage Gators for a Skyline Conference battle at 1 p.m. from Clark Athletic Center.
