Gameday Program

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball team improved to 2-0 in overtime games with Wednesday's 79-72 Skyline Conference win over the visiting Maritime Privateers from Clark Athletic Center.  With the win, Old Westbury (6-10) has now won six of its last seven games and moves to 6-3 in the conference standings while Maritime (5-12) slipped to 3-7.

Both teams battled throughout the game, resulting in 14 total lead changes, in which each team took four separate leads in the opening half.  Neither team was able to break loose, as Old Westbury held a 13-8 lead before Maritime answered with a 13-4 run to take a 21-17 lead with 8:30 remaining.  Both teams traded three pointers in the final minute to settle for a 31-all tie at the half as T'Vaughn Gibson's free throw knotted the game in the final second of play.

Reynaldo Walters' layup put Old Westbury up by four points (35-31) just 3:24 into second-half play.  Maritime then took its largest lead (44-39) off an 11-2 run from 15:38 to 12:49.  Floyd Leroy's layup with 11:03 left kick-started a 21-7 Panther run for a game-high 10-point lead (63-53) with 2:53 remaining.  Maritime closed out the final 2:42 of the half with a 14-4 run to send the game into overtime off Gibson's game-tying three pointer with 35 seconds left in regulation.

In the extra frame, Patrick MacDonald's layup just 1:26 into play put the Privateers up by three points (70-67).  Walters answered with five of Old Westbury's 12 overtime points to lead the Panthers to victory.  Old Westbury closed out the final 2:32 with an 8-0 run to secure the victory.

Walters poured in a game-high 25 points (7-10 FG) to go with six assists and three steals to headline Old Westbury's statistical leaders.  Leroy (15 points), Luckens Victor (11 points) and Mark Gjonlekaj (10 points) all scored in double-digits while Victor chipped in with nine rebounds, three blocks and two steals.

John Liccesse scored 24 points (4-9 3FG) to pace Maritime.  MacDonald (14 points), Gibson (13 points) and Isaiah Hayes (12) followed in double-digit scoring while Hayes added four steals and three blocks.  Sean Corley's eight assists directed the Privateer offense.

In the end, Old Westbury shot 46.4 percent from the field (26-56), 43.9 percent from three-point range (7-16) and 74.1 percent from the free-throw line (20-27) while Maritime connected on 41.3 percent from the floor (26-63), 33.3 percent from beyond the arc (6-18) ad 63.6 percent from the charity stripe (14-22).  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 40-29, scoring 20 second-chance points off 14 offensive rebounds.  Old Westbury also scored 21 points off 18 Privateer turnovers.
