@OW_Panthers Women’s Volleyball celebrates Senior Day, splits conference tri-match

Old Westbury earned a five-set victory over Yeshiva on Senior Day

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's volleyball celebrated seniors Rayn Brown (2012-15), Gerlande Lucas (2014-15) and Shannon Mullen (2014-15) by hosting a Skyline Conference tri-match in Sunday's season finale from Clark Athletic Center.  In the first match, Old Westbury claimed a crucial 3-2 (25-13, 15-25, 19-25, 27-25, 15-7) victory over the Yeshiva Maccabees before dropping the second match to the St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) Bears (25-18, 25-9, 25-9).  With the split, Old Westbury closed out the 2015 season 6-18 overall and 3-7 in conference play.

Against Yeshiva, Rayn Brown led the way with a career high of 28 kills on 69 swings to hit .290 for the match.  She added 19 digs, six aces and five assists to go along with one solo block and one blocking assist.  Chelsey Hoffman posted her second career double-double after finishing with career highs in assists (36) and digs (30).  Hoffman also contributed seven kills while Brittany Buchanan and Olivia O'Keefe each followed with four kills.  Sofia Goris served four aces and Shanayia Lloyd totaled three.  Old Westbury also received solid contributions on the defensive front from Goris (15 digs), Brianne Dorney (15 digs), O'Keefe (14 digs) and Lloyd (10 digs).

Emily Rohan and Gavriela Colton led the way for Yeshiva with 13 and 12 kills, respectively, while Aliza Muller's 17 assists moved the offense.  Carol Jacobson paced the defense with 40 digs, and was aided by Rohan with 18.

Brown served eight-straight points during a key 9-0 run to clinch the opening set as the Panthers hit .314 to Yeshiva's .154.

Down 11-8 in the second set, Yeshiva (2-16, 1-9 Skyline) scored 13 of the next 14 points to take a commanding 21-12 lead.

Clinging to a 13-12 lead, Yeshiva claimed six-straight points to build its largest lead of the third set.

Following a 6-0 Maccabee run in the fourth set, Old Westbury stormed back with a 5-0 spurt to make it a 17-15 match.  Trailing 23-21, Goris served a pair of aces during a 4-0 stretch to put Old Westbury ahead 24-23.  Old Westbury would maintain the lead as Hoffman served the set-winning point.

Goris opened the fifth set with an ace to spark a 6-1 run and never looked back during a set in which the Panthers combined to hit .368.

The second match found Old Westbury in a tight first set. St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) set the tone early with an 11-1 lead.  Old Westbury trimmed its deficit to five by scoring 15 of the next 25 points.  The Bears (10-12, 4-6 Skyline) would extend its lead to seven for the first-set win.

The Bears would take early 7-0 and 5-0 advantages to start the second and third sets, respectively, to pull off the three-set sweep.

Buchanan nailed down a career-best five kills to pace the Panthers.  Brown followed with four and moved the offense with eight assists.  Lloyd and Brown both scooped up 18 digs while Dorney chipped in with 12.

Lauren GaNun collected 21 kills for the Bears as Anna Carbone dished out 24 assists to go along with 20 digs.
