@OW_Panthers Baseball topples John Jay, 11-1

Old Westbury wins its fourth straight as Nick Yip ties home run record

Gameday Program

YAPHANK, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - SUNY Old Westbury baseball captured its fourth-straight victory with an 11-1 final against the John Jay Bloodhounds on Thursday afternoon from Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, New York.  Old Westbury now stands at 4-2 on the season while the Bloodhounds slipped to 0-3.

Nick Yip's single started a two-out rally for the Panthers in the first inning.  Two batters later, Christian Faust sent a double to right field to score Yip and Jonathan Pagan for an early 2-0 lead.  Old Westbury followed with four more run on three hits in the second inning, capped by Yip's solo shot for his third home run of the season for a 6-0 lead.  Yip's 11th career homer tied him with Anthony Orsano(2011-12) for the program record.

The Panther offense gave starter Caleb Olesen plenty of support to claim the victory.  Olesen retired his first nine batters before allowing a leadoff single to Zach Hyde in the fourth inning.

John Jay posted their lone run of the game in the fifth inning.  Olesen dealt a pair of leadoffs walks, followed by a fielder's choice and a groundout to allow Nestor Amarante to score to make it a 6-1 game.

Carlos Balmaceda's sixth inning double scored Michael Cardino to stretch to lead to six runs.  Old Westbury added three-run seventh inning when Pagan doubled, Cardino singled and Matthew Taurisani tripled, to each drive in one run.

Yip closed out the scoring in the eighth inning with a two-out RBI double to plate home Eddie Hernandez for the 11-1 final.

Yip finished the game with a career-high four hits in five trips to the plate, and scored three runs, while Taurisani followed with a pair of triples in a 2-for-4 performance at the plate.  Cardino (1-3, RBI, BB) and Pagan (1-3, RBI, SB, BB) each scored two runs.  Old Westbury held a 12-2 advantage in hits.

Olesen (1-0) logged five innings of mound work, allowing one run on one hit and two walks.  Tyler Kapela fanned four batters in three hitless frames before Tim Ingram pitched a scoreless ninth.

Charles Mendes (0-1) surrendered seven runs on six hits and four walks in six innings to take John Jay's loss.

Hyde collected both hits for John Jay.
