@OW_Panthers Baseball sweeps Skyline Conference opener

Old Westbury claimed 10-3 and 23-3 victories over Mount Saint Vincent to extend win streak to eight games

BRONX (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - SUNY Old Westbury baseball (8-2) extended its win streak to eight games Sunday afternoon after capturing 10-3 and 23-3 Skyline Conference road victories over the Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins from Lehman College's South Field.  Old Westbury advances to 2-0 in conference play while sending the Dolphins (4-9) to 3-2.

Game One: Old Westbury 10, Mount Saint Vincent 3
Old Westbury broke the scoring ice in the fourth inning with three straight hits to take a two-run lead.  Jonathan Pagan singled to lead off the frame, followed by Christian Faust's RBI double, and Michael Cardino's RBI single for the Panthers' early advantage.

Keith Brodesser sliced Mount Saint Vincent's deficit in half with a solo home run off Panther starter Tyler Kapela to make it a 2-1 game.

Old Westbury threatened in the fifth with the bases loaded, but Mount Saint Vincent starter Nicholas Recrate worked his way out of the jam by inducing ground outs to the Panthers' two-three-four hitters.

Mount Saint Vincent slipped past Old Westbury in the home half of the fifth to take a brief 3-2 lead.  Kapela tossed a pair of one-out walks before an infield ground out scored Nicholas Pace.  Following Kapela's third walk of the inning, Keith Schroeher scored on a wild pitch.

Old Westbury quickly responded in the sixth inning, batting around the order once to score six runs on five hits and two errors for an 8-3 advantage.  Tommy Ziegen's RBI double scored Matthew Taurisani for the go ahead run, making it 4-3.  Two batters later, Nick Yip's single scored Carlos Balmaceda and Ziegen to spark a two-out rally.  Pagan then doubled home Yip, followed by Faust's RBI single to score Pagan.

Eddie Hernandez stroked an RBI double in the seventh and Jake Schwartz added a solo home run in the ninth to close out the scoring.

Hernandez (2-4, RBI, BB, SB), Pagan (2-4, RBI, 2 R, BB), Faust (2-5, 2 RBI, R), Cardino (2-5, RBI, R) and Ziegen (2-5, RBI, R) combined for 10 of Old Westbury's 14 hits.

Kapela (1-0) fanned four batters to earn Old Westbury's win.  He allowed three runs on four hits and three walks in five innings of work.  Relievers Vinny Bieniek, Nick Schoen and Justin Mize combined to strikeout five batters in four innings of no-hit ball

Recrate (0-2) surrendered eight runs (three earned) on 10 hits and three walks in 5.2 innings in Mount Saint Vincent's loss.

Game Two: Old Westbury 23, Mount Saint Vincent 3
Old Westbury used a two-out rally in the opening frame to take a commanding 5-0 lead.  Cardino drew a bases loaded walk to score Yip for the game's initial run.  Robert Crocitto then cleared the bases with a grand-slam home run to close out first-inning scoring.

Panther starter Tim Ingram received all the support he needed in the first inning to pitch his way to his third victory of the season.  Ingram did however allow back-to-back singles in the first before a double steal scored Pace for Mount Saint Vincent's first run.

Pagan added to Old Westbury's lead in the second with an RBI single to score Hernandez, making it a 6-1 game.

Ingram bounced back in the second with back-to-back strikeouts to close out a one-two-three inning.

Old Westbury broke the game open in the third with five runs on three hits to go up 11-1.  Brandon Stein singled home Crocitto to start the scoring.  Ziegen then clubbed a two-run homer, and two batters later, Yip launched a two-run shot over the right center wall to become Old Westbury's all-time home run leader.  Yip passed Anthony Orsano (2011-12) with his 12th career home run.

Ziegen opened the scoring in the fourth with a grand slam for his third-career home run.  Later in the inning, Robinson Hernandez's single scored Joey Walsh, and Taurisani laced a two-run single to make it an 18-1 game.

Old Westbury continued to pour on the runs as Walsh's two-out single scored Ziegen in the fifth.  Old Westbury tacked on two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh for a 23-1 advantage.

Mount Saint Vincent scored a pair of runs in the seventh to make it a 23-3 final.  Dean Sheridan's throwing error allowed Brandon Pasquale to score, and Pace's RBI single closed out the scoring.

Ingram (3-1) racked up seven strikeouts in five innings while allowing three hits and one walk.  Reliever Carlos Solorzano tossed a scoreless sixth before James DiSantis allowed two unearned runs in the seventh.

Yip (3-3, 2 RBI, 2 R), Ziegen (3-4, 6 RBI, 3 R), Walsh (3-3, RBI, 2 R, BB) and Stein (2-3, RBI, 2 R, BB) all produced multi-hit games.  Cardino and Eddie Hernandez each scored two runs while extending their hitting streaks to nine games.

Mount Saint Vincent starter Joseph Crosser surrendered six runs on six hits and two walks in two innings of work to fall to 0-2 on the season.  The Dolphin relievers allowed 17 runs on 15 hits and five walks.

The Dolphins were led offensively by Pace's 3-for-4 game at the plate.
